Domino Sugar Sign-Baltimore, MD

Domino Sugar Sign-Baltimore, MD by crabsandbeer.
At night, the big red "Domino Sugars" sign, literally the size of a basketball court, glows from the refinery rooftop. . Like the Orioles, crab cakes and John Waters, the Domino sign screams Baltimore. It costs $100,000 a year to power and to keep the 1950s-vintage neon tubes in good repair. In this town, rich in the physical remnants of its working past, that's money well spent: a blazing reminder that people and machines still make things, that the world hasn't gone entirely virtual, no matter how much the Chamber of Commerce hypes the "Digital Harbor" and the dot-com future it hopes to house in the city's old factories and loft spaces.

Classic shot!

I didn't know all of this information about the sign. I'm glad that they are putting up the money for it. It's great to see, especially when coming back into town at night on 95.

LOL, it had been YEARS since I'd been to Ballmer for anything but an O's game...but last week I met a friend for dinner (Matthew's Pizza on Eastern...had some great pies and Natty Bo's even though they're not brewed in Baltimore any more....) and we took a nightime tour of the city. Being the dorks we are we went to this EXACT place and I saw this view in person, amongst many other nightime Baltimore classics. Good stuff. I'm fascinated by the port....:-)

Beautiful shot. The reflections are killer.
