Evolution quote on Starbucks cup

"Evolution as described by Charles Darwin is a scientific theory, abundantly reconfirmed, explaining physical phenomena by physical causes. Intelligent Design is a faith-based initiative in rhetorical argument. Should we teach I.D. in America's public schools? Yes, let's do -- not as science...
haha (:
Evolution quote on Starbucks cup by Colin Purrington.
My coffee habit finally paid off, and I scored the Holy Grail [sic] of take-out cups. And on a Sunday morning, too! Indeed, I think that's the only time Starbucks gives out the #220. I left a few Darwin stickers as a thank-you to the staff. They were underwhelmed.

You know those mugs you can buy that look exactly like Starbucks paper cups? They could make some money by putting the good quotes onto those mugs. Wouldn't it be great to carry the above around, all day??

This is really ineresting....why did they decide to do this?

It's pretty out there for a marketing idea...most of which seem to shy away from hot topics such as evolution and ID. I'd love to hear the brainstorming session behind this pitch.

perhaps the staff were working there to save up for their fees to liberty university, which would explain their underwhelmedness*.

Isaiah12:2: Not sure how there is a truth in between with respect to public school.

The teaching of verifiable facts (the general mission of a well rounded public science education - tho that is quite different than what actually happens these days) is a different activity than indoctrination with dogma. Natural and supernatural are two different animals.

In a diverse and civil society, those two would not be so easily confused.

What a different world this would be if the dominant religion had remained polytheistic and not evangelical and self-centered monotheism.

Yea, and Starbucks donates only to Democratic causes, or so I've heard. That's in contrast to Dunkin' Donuts, which donates primarily to conservatives' campaigns. Dunkin' Donuts is also the preferred site for Young Republican meetings near college campuses. So whenever you see a politician in a coffee shop, it's usually DD. Democrats, even though they get money from Starbucks don't seem to buy coffee there during photo ops. Odd.

Worldwide ethical values have been stepping back in the last 35 years, we must face it's a fact.
Have you lately watched to a movie from '70s? You'll find there described a world lots more free from Church, religious contrasts and monotheisms.
To tell the truth, I'm worried indeed.

See, Disco cant be dead, it kept us sane! *winks*

Ever watch "The Poseidon Adventure", Fantasy Island, Charlies Angels, Smurfs, Sanford and Son?

Yikes, disco was fine but I am not so sure the 70s were that hot, I remember them, they were sorta funky. As a girl, I got heaps of heavy message regarding what a woman SHOULD do, got heaps of anxiety about thermonuclear war and saving the whales and impeaching Nixon (yeah!)... they were some heavy days.. the values were not so clear and church was no less powerful (heck, I think in the early 70s was when the Catholic Church started doing mass in the US in english instead of latin.. I liked the latin more).

I dont know what my neighbors do ethics wise but I like it that way :-).

But Starbucks doesn't give money to the republicans! Or at least that's what I've read. Our only other choice here is Dunkin' Donuts, which is a heavy republican contributor, and hangout spot for Young Republicans.

Am I reading the wrong material? I though intellegent design was regarded as an alternative theory, but an attack on Darwinism none the less.

it is not regarded as an alternative by rational non-magical thinking types .. it is a pallid fabric of poorly wrought verbiage meant to cloak insipid creationism.

OK, I'm still not sure I agree with the quote though.
I recently purchased Origin of Species and have been reading through it. Even Darwin dosn't seem to think Darwin had it right. Even what I was taught in school is no longer regarded as factual.
I also have to admit, I certainly don't have the 100% conviction of Colin here that all the questions have been answered.

Hmmm... Reading "the origin" is about as relevant as reading Mendel's original notes. Things like DNA and molecular biology and restriction enzymes and model genetic systems and genomic sequencing were not even a twinkle in the eye then.

Scientists (I am one) are not looking for a source document that has "all the answers" nor is there any moment in time when mankind knows "it all". I think to be a scientist who does good work you have to be comfortable with the unknown and not be in search for the ultimate cliffs notes.

It is a false choice between your "book" and science unless the tradition you follow requires fundamentalism. That then is not about how science fails you are a human but quite the inverse, how the fundamentalism fails the human in a complex and diverse world. (I do not mean to imply you are a fundamentalist or anything at all, just stating some observations in the general).

Science as a whole is not looking for proof of the supernatural so it is not in conflict with religion (same can not be said the other way around, unfortunately).

In addition, instead or reading the origin of species, read "Molecular Biology of the Gene"

Molecular Biology of the Gene, Sixth Edition

it will give a real grounding in what science today is talking about, not 150+ years ago.

fascinating, truly.

To think that the characterization of nature and it's means and methods for coping with it's environment has anything at all to do with human psychological pathologies (beyond the development of the naked ape) is so off target it is illustrative of the author's utter misunderstanding of the theory of evolution. That people created "social darwinism" to explain their pathological behavior doesnt mean that it is in fact accurate.

Hi all,
I just need to tell you that Islam doesn't state that earth rests on a giant turtle... Islam contradicts with the darwin theory, Islam considers people as the finest creations of God (Allah Subhanahu wata'ala).

Colin Purrington  Pro User  says:

I thought Islam and Hinduism were completely different sects? The quote on the cup talks about the Hindu giant turtle, not an Islamic giant turtle. I don't think there is an equivalent story in Islam that gives specifics on creation, and instead just floats the idea that things just "are" according to the will of a supernatural being. I.e., a belief intellectually akin to Intelligent Design. Anyone out there who can speak on behalf of Koran?

David Quammen RAWKS!!!1! I'm about to start reading The Reluctant Mr. Darwin for the second time.

Just finished the recently published (2008) revised and expanded edition of Natural Acts: A Sidelong View of Science and Nature. He's pretty much kept his "older and wiser" paws off the original chapters and added a new introduction and 7 new essays, including a lengthy (50-page) entry on Mike Fay's Megatransect. Great stuff—even my non-scientist best buddy ROFL'd over some of his funnier lines.
