Stick insect

Head
Stick insect by Colin Purrington.
Probably a common walkingstick (Diapheromera femorata). If I'm wrong, please let me know. At French Creek State Park, PA (USA). On sycamore tree. It didn't get the memo that its camouflage sucks on sycamore bark. I don't think they even eat sycamore leaves...but maybe I didn't get that memo.

It's kind of cool that the front legs are drawn up together along the body's long axis. The effect is to make the stick insect longer, but I half wonder whether there is protective value in _not_ appearing to have six legs. I bet a lot of predators have search images that might include six legs.

awesome. I haven't seen one of these since I was 10 -- I need to look harder, perhaps.
