Sir Charles Thomas WHEELER (1892-1974)
The enormous “Earth” and “Water” figures for the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall. It had been intended to add sculptures of the other two elements but budget cuts prevented this happening. Wheeler received £ 12,600 for his work but working with Portland stone figures weighing 40 tons apiece was not an easy task. It is thought that the sculptures were inspired by Michelangelo’s figures of “Night” and “Day” in the Medici Chapel in Rome.
