The Columbus Education Association’s Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner is
the longest-running event in the city of
Columbus that celebrates of the life and
spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It
was started in 1978 by the late John
Grossman, long-time President of the
Columbus Education Association.
This year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner featured Keynote Speaker Rev.Jesse Jackson. Following Rev. Jackson's keynote speech, the two awards of the evening were presented.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award is presented annually by the teachers of the Columbus Education Association in recognition of those who have demonstrated efforts to keep alive the ideals and spirit of the late Dr. King. Pastor Dale B. Snyder and Priscilla Tyson were the co-recipients of the 2012 The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.
The Helen Jenkins Davis award is named in honor of the first Black teacher hired by the Columbus City Schools, and is presented to a Columbus teacher who has worked to promote social justice, diversity and human and civil rights. CCS teacher Jimmie Beall was the recipient of the 2012 Helen Jenkins Davis Award.
