house gecko of Vohemar

vicious combination!
the eyes of a gecko
so interesting...
house gecko of Vohemar by Farl.
I have to assume that they are the common house lizard in Northeast Madagascar as they were all over the place in Vohemar. That the gecko blended oh-so well with the pink walls of the beach cabin we were staying may even show that it may be one of the everpresent chameleons in the country. I only had one shot so you can actually detect its hurried movement as it scampered away when I took out my camera.

the gold dust day gecko or Phelsuma laticauda
(ID thanks to Ian or reservoir frog)
Vohemar, Northeast Madagascar, East Africa

Thanks everyone. I have some time to burn in the Dubai airport as my flight back to the Philippines is still at 8AM (it's 2AM now). I don't think I will give up my internet spot though hahaha!

Yes, I posted this as I think it represents my travel in Madagascar: seeing strange plants and animals that simply flabbergast me.

It is definitely not my strongest pic as Allan has pointed out, the head is out of focus but this guy was fast and I only was able to take one (!) shot and then it was gone (it went under the toilet bowl! hahaha! yes- this was a shot inside the loo). Good thing I put my camera on automatic.

And Ian, thanks so much for the ID. I will change the description now. It's my OC (obsession-compulsion) to be accurate and detailed with my facts so you just cut me a few meandering in the internet. Almost bought a book too. Maybe I still would. Madagascar flora and fauna are out of this world.

Salamat!

Beautiful, Farl Geckos where I come from in Australia are often pretty greens, but I've never seen one like this. And you're right, trying to photograph one is quite tricky. Good catch!

Well, Lizards like this are hard to shoot. They move almost constantly, freezing only for fear or ambush.
I cared for a hand full of these during a reptile exhibit at a childrens museum...They move very fast...but they were cute.
Tokay Gekkos are another matter. Huge, and purple with orange spots, they bark and bite.
BTW: the day gekkos have a good bit of blue in their pigmentation. especially between the eyes. UV light (in Sunlight) exposes it.

yeah, it's amazing that geckos are just about everywhere- they have a purpose in the food chain after all.

yes, Terence, I enjoyed my Madagascar visit: just 5 nights and always in a different place and hotel. Totally living in my suitcase!

Enrico, no, I saw 2 kinds of lemurs at Montagne d'Ambre but they were far away. the Philippines does have a lemur which is one of the smallest in the world (the tarsier) and I've held one. while they smell, they feel warm and vulnerable.

Hi Farl, indeed, beautifull little creatures and as i know now, thanks to you, also very colourfull ones! But apart from the visual colour variatons, is there a difference in the sounds they produce as well, or is the common "tokay yell" a universal one?

Whenever i'm lucky to be able spending my vacation in "the tropics", it'll allways take at least a week untill i'm used to those loud "TOOKAAAAAAY" yells during the night.

The first nights i just lay there and listen to all the strange and different sounds coming out of the jungle, having only little naps in between Gecko yells, but while i'm awake enjoying every minute of it!

Miek, I wish I heard their calls! I didn't. talking about onomatopoeia, in the Philippines, we call lizards/geckos "toko" (the big ones) or "tiko" (small variety). I bet these Malagasy ones speak the same universal language.

Love this! The colors are amazing. I love geckos. I tried to photo one in Mexico. It was a very pale pink and translucent - you could actually see it's organs through it's skin. I loved that little fellow. Unfortunately when I tried to photo it not only did I miss - they are FAST - but it never came back into my room.
