- a few of the doors are in pastel colors too but in contrasting combinations
- perfect here! - Shooting Chris
doors of Yogya
There are few things which struck me in Central Java:
1. people are refined and polite. Even touters and drivers tend to
introduce their wares and service with minta maaf or I beg your pardon.
2. they love solid bright COLORS on their buildings.
While the Balinese hate empty spaces and decorate every recesses with carvings, polychromic paintings and colored patterns, the Central Javanese love solid blocks of bright, screaming colors. They don't want their buildings dark and somber. I took numerous pictures of nearly 20 attention-grabbing doors from just a 50 meter strip in downtown Jogja and I had to stop myself or I'll run out of battery. And the palette is repeated in most of Jawa Tengah. For me, only a collage can best portray the central Javanese color sensibility.
from the streets of Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia.

Terence, I had trouble selecting among the countless door shots I took so the selection process was painful.

This is another lovely series, Farl. What I realise from these months of looking at your photos is that they are usually richly coloured and bright. I feel that in you. Thank you again for sharing. :-)

thanks everyone.
Gregory, you got that right. I was looking in my photos and I only have 2 sepia and perhaps 1 b&W and 3 or 4 digitally decolorized. and unlike you I am scared of B&W as I still can't handle them "professionally". still am learning...

Don't be too scared of BW -- so long as you have the original colour prints, you can process them for BW. Already, I can imagine how stunning some of your church shots and the recent bird-cage one might look in BW.

thanks for all the generous words and favoriting. I don't know where to start. I guess I will answer some queries...
Tim, I don't notice bright colors like these in most buildings in West Java (Jakarta, Bogor Bandung, etc) and East Java (Surabaya area). But places in Central like Jogja sport such colors.
Gregory, I will try your suggestions. hmmmm...
Micah, I'm not so sure about the Dutch influence as I've never been to The Netherlands except in the Amsterdam airport. I think pre-colonial Javanese are already colorful as manifested in their old textiles like the batik.
Moon, I was called Farlito once- but that was when I was a child. "-ito/a" suffixes are common Hispanic endearment terms to designate little or small. hahaha!
Salamat everyone again.

To add on the affinity to color of the Central Javanese, the Borobudur w/c is the largest Buddhist stupa in the world, is said to be painted with a rainbow of colors once. Scholars believe that the white residue paint on the stone blocks is a primer to the color paint of the entire temples. Imagine the awe the visitors had in the 8th century when the large ziggurat-like temple was in full colors!
I will post later a shot of the incredible Borobudur temple. The only shot I have is that of the uppermost level in flickr.com/photos/colloidfarl/52419365/.

Apa Kabar Pah Farl, I use to work In Jogya and Jakarta in the 90's.
We Designed and Supervise Hotel Const. in Jogya at that time. I was there for about 2 yrs. I love the Warm hearted People and love the Food. I hope I can come back there sometime and see my friends.
And Cool Picture by the way.

Ishmael, baik baik aja. Cool job you have. My fascination with doors probably stems from my old ambition to be an architect. And I agree with you on the Jogya food esp the gudeg. thanks.
Ishrona (92 months ago | reply)
We eat Gudeg in the sidewalk at Jalan Maliaboro in Jogya. One of my faves is the Ayam Goreng Suharti, Satay Kambing. Jogya Soto, and the buffet that they put all the food in your table and you only pay what you eat. I love to come back to that place. I miss the place.
Farl (92 months ago | reply)
Ishmael, yes, the cold gudeg (it's a dish w/ banana flower) at Jln Malioboro is delicious. I haven't had the time to taste the hot variety. and the BEST fried chicken I had in Java is indeed the ayam Goreng Suharti. We made sure we had that as it is famous all over Indonesia.
and the buffet you mentioned must be nasi padang. I have about 3 pics tagged padang but maybe this one will stir up some memories:

What kind of a name is Farl? Never heard it before. And how is it that you travel so much?
Farl (92 months ago | reply)
Jen, I am a chemist who works for an American food chemicals company which has some seaweed manufacturing facilities in Norway, the US (Maine in particular), Denmark and the Philippines. Cebu is my homebase. We buy seaweed from a lot of places including Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and West Africa. A lot of what I do are in my pics with the tag "seaweed", primarily this one:

Wonderful collage of colored doors. Your story tells a lot about the area, and lends an increased interest in the actual doors.
