• The San Rafael Ranch is near this location.
  • South of here is a great monument in Lochiel to Fray Marcos de Niza, one of the oldest documented sites where the Spanish crossed into Arizona in 1539!!! This early date amazes me.

San Rafael Valley, Arizona

A brilliant skyscape just after the rains and overcast sky suddenly disappeared in the late afternoon. This was taken in the San Rafael Valley of southern Arizona. This place is about 10 miles north of Lochiel, close to the border with Mexico.

Without a wide-angle lens, I would not have been able to capture this scene. Now that I see what an inexpensive lens can do, I want that Canon 10-22mm wide angle lens even more. I'm waiting for that bluebird of happiness to drop about $700 on me. I may be waiting a long, long time for that bird.

This is lovely. I want a wide-angle lens too but for the Olympus they are very expensive. I may have to check out the second hand market.

Beautiful. This is what I have always loved about the West and Arizona in particular -- the vast skies.

The view is outstanding, BJ! Seems like you could touch the clouds they are so low. It's a great pic!

You really need another one?!?!?! LOLOL

there is photostitch software everywhere, it may even be a part of the software you got with the 40d ... line up a few pics and have the software stitch them together....

What lens did you use for this, and how much does it cost? I'm wondering if Nikon has something similar.

Great one -- great big sky. You really did the clouds justice.

The color of the sky and the clouds are beautiful, but it's the depth that is outstanding. It gives the illusion that you could walk into the picture.

Mark was my traveling buddy this trip out, and he will eventually post great skyscapes too. Truly a magical time in a magical place i love to visit several times a year.

@Garry - Sigma lens listed in tags and it was about $250. I really like having a wide-angle lens now but a tripod is pretty much mandatory and I did not use one on this outing.

Thanks to all for stopping by today!

Here's another website with Patagonia information - am now reading Jim Harrison's novel called True North, he's a resident and the quote from him about the area is that it is "preposterously beautiful". Agreed!

Beautiful. Wide open spaces and skies. Thanks for sharing this. Brings back memories. You'll have to get back here during the monsoon. Ghost Riders in the Sky was written by a cowboy from east of here down Douglas way - Stan Jones.

This pictures captures one of my favorite things about Southern Arizona. Wide open spaces. Whoever says the Big Sky is up North has never seen Southern Arizona. Great Capture.
