With some patience and some hard work, but with a radio that was more than
capable of bending to Mike's desire to have a radio with modern features in
his classic ride, he shared with us step by step using words & pix how
he installed our new model one Chrome in his 62 Impala. Please note, this
install should only be attempted by someone that has some fabrication
skills and lots of patience--- but the photos are here, and because our
radio is so flexible, it can be done by most handy end users:
Here's the step by step text: (Thanks Michael!!)
1. Place bezel in dash opening with wide section to the top. Mark where the two tabs at the bottom of dash opening on the inside are. Remove bezel and take a file and cut a groove at marks about 1/8 of an inch deep and 1/4 inch wide.
2.Mount shaft brackets and mark a line on the face plate.
3. Remove brackets and face plate from radio and place brackets on face plate lined up with marks and centered. Use holes in face plate as a template and mark brackets and drill 7/64 holes. Now bolt the face plate and brackets together with #2 machine screws and a flat washer between face plate and brackets. (I used some 1/8 pop rivet back-up washers from Home Depot)
4.Mount brackets to radio using front bottom hole on radio and top back slot on brackets. Now turn face up as far as possible with the bracket all the way down on the screws.
5. Now mark brackets as shown in pictures. Remove brackets from radio and face plate and cut brackets as marked. All so you will need to file down the points on brackets about 1/8 inch (see picture with screw driver pointing to this area).
6. Now make you two small straps ( I used plumbers tape ) and attach as shown in pictures. This helps to support nose piece. Install shafts in brackets using back up plate, large flat washer and nuts. Center to center spacing is about 6 1/4 inches. Be sure spacing is equal on each side of face plate and shafts are centered up and down with face plate.
7. Now proceed with installation directions in manual.
Note: Cover chrome surfaces with masking tape during mock-up and assembly to keep from scratching surfaces.
