Her Lesson

Thumbs up! (thank you Silver Turtle for pointing this out)
Her Lesson by Clonny.
This girl got a lot of attention for this one. The sign reads:

What I learned from BUSH
1. Lying is O.K.
2. Cheating is O.K.
3. Torture is O.K.
4. Taking people's rights is O.K.
5. Neglecting the poor is O.K.
6. Being a religious hypocrite is O.K.
7. Killing is O.K.
8. Incompetence is O.K.
9. Cronyism is O.K.

Great photo!

That's one good message.
Bush has earned the hatred of most of the population of the world. He has made the US more hated the the terrorists. I'm Canadian and I can tell you the anger that people in the rest of the world now have towards the US because of Bush's lies and abuses.

Think about that.

Fun with an F-1 you need to really think about youth. This kid isn't 5, this kid is old enough to fully understand what the sign says and means. AND maybe if YOU were paying attention, you'd realize that those are things that Bush is teaching our youth- at least any youth that pay attention to current events.

Oh, right. But if she had shot someone with a gun she'd go the Big House. Give me a break. I remember perfectly well when I was 12 that I would know those things were wrong that are written on her sign. Better she should be used sitting in a school reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, I guess. Whatever happened to freedom?

O.k. so she's young. I don't think anyone here can say what her age is for sure. But the encouraging thing is she is involved.

Obviously she has been influenced by the current administration.

These are either her words or are the influences of her environment, peer group, parents etc...

I think this hits the mark dead nuts on. My eleven year old son is this tuned in, and knows what those and many more phrases mean. Our youth is much more attuned to current politics than I was at their age.

I let him determine his own opinion, and more than once he has voiced his concern or made a statement very similar to the ones she is holding.

As the British tabloid The Mirror said post election "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?"

When you figure it out, please let us know, because it's been downhill since that day....

I've yet to here someone refute the statements being made above.

If you think Bush is so great take a stroll over to www.ebaumsworld.com and look at the funny videos and take a look at our infamous pres. in all his living stupidity middle finger and all.

So when is Karl Rove running for president? I'm going to put my 11 year old on the ballot, he most certainly has more common sense than any of those incompetents in the Whitehouse today, every last one of them!!!

Down from soapbox and it is now put away....

JLeski says:

Old Enough stated, " I've yet to here someone refute the statements being made above. "

You must be joking, or you don't watch television, or read opposing views.

Let's see some examples:

1. Lying is O.K. - Refering, I'm sure - to the "Lied us into a war" chant...that has been disproven over and over...no lies..This administration used the same intelligence that everyone else did - and they agreed that WMD's were there, or capable of being there.

2. Cheating is O.K. - Let's see...talking about the elections? No matter what your talking points are - studies / investigations were done, and while there were instances of improper actions - on BOTH sides - no coordinated or widespread voter fraud, intimidation or otherwise.

3. Torture is O.K. - Actions of a few who are or have been prosecuted. Incidently, how is putting panties on someone's head torture?

4. Taking people's rights is O.K.
- Please tell me what rights of yours have been taken away, specifically. Patriot act? I haven't lost any of my rights...tell me which of yours are gone.

5. Neglecting the poor is O.K. - Please give examples - credible ones...not this "Katrina" crap where the locals did nothing and then blamed the Federal response.
Not defending Brown's FEMA...he was incompetent...no question.

6. Being a religious hypocrite is O.K. - How so, please explain.

7. Killing is O.K. - Let me put this plainly. This is a war. Killing is inevitable. We did not start this action, 9-11 did. We responded to an act of Terrorism and went after Al Qaida in Afghanistan. Given the circumstances of Iraq's non-compliance with UN resolutions,
the possibility of WMD's and continued humanitarian neglect ( The REAL reasons for war - look it up in the congressional resolution authorizing the action ) we then moved on Iraq. War is ugly - but better than waiting until another 9-11 or worse occurs.

8. Incompetence is O.K. - This administration is NOT perfect - far from it. The war could have been handled better, among other things. Incompetence is not ok.

9. Cronyism is O.K. - In a democratic administration, this would be called either loyalty or appointing someone whose credentials you're familiar with. But with Bush, it's cronyism. I'm not saying that some are questionable...but be realistic and not use hyperbole when discussing these things.

Gino, I am in favor of the statements made, not the opposition. I agree with what's on the poster.

I was referring to the fact that there has been not one person to give evidence to the contrary in this thread, as you now have.

We can argue for years on the validity of yours and my statements, but one thing is clear, listen to what our brothers and sisters in other countries are saying about us. Look at the USA from their eyes. We are in shambles because of the current administrations policies, plain and simple. The saddest thing is they don't care, they still continue to stand on the top of the hill pounding their chest and commanding all to kneel before them or else.

Nobody has brought forth compelling evidence that George isn't a sham, that he really does understand what's going on etc...

These statements above are, to me , a true reflection of his actions (and yes I do watch opposing views on the tele and hear them on the radio, but it doesn't change my belief of his incompetence).

He can spew all of the rhetoric he and Rove want, but actions are what people perceive to be the truth, there are no facts, only perceptions.

Wow! I didn't expect so much attention here.

In addition to taking pictures during the walkout, I spent time talking to these kids during and after the protest. Each individually made the decision (with parental permission or not) to face the consequences of missing school to make sure their voice was being heard. That should tell you right there that they know exactly what they were marching for. It's something they are very concerned about, and I don't blame them for taking to the streets.

Well as a Brit, I largely agree with what Gino said. the War in Afghanistan was fully justified, and the war in Iraq should have been legal (Saddam was in breach of Resolutions, as are Israel, but the US likes to ignore that). Sadamm should have been taken out in 1991 at the end of the Gulf War, but better late than never. Yes, Bush and Blair should have made better preparatins for after the war (I reckon that's why Blair wanted more time before attacking), but that doesn't make thew war any less justifiable.

As for the torture stuff- nothing has really been proved from Guantanamo Bay and the soldiers involved in the Abu Grahib attrocities should be shot (as should any British soldiers who may have done the same or similar).

What alot of people are forgetting is that the world doesn't consider Bush as morrally corrupt. they consider the entire USA to be. I'd rather live here than there, no matter who the President.

There's a lot of stuff out there that points to the falsification of evidence, Flickr comrade. Their constant avoidance of investigation also doesn’t help their case either. This site has a good database for looking up information on Chimpy's efforts to wage war in Iraq.

The existing torture evidence does suggest some serious problems; however, we run into the problem of secrecy and avoidance of the issue again. You may remember Rumsfeld not wanting to release more photos of abuse – possibly rape and murder -- back in May of this year. Anyway, the ICRC and Human Rights Watch are looking into these matters so check their sites for more.

I don’t see anyone saying they don't want to live in the USA. The majority of us just want to rid the country of Chimpy and pals. Heck, 53% of Americans now want to see Bush impeached if it's found he lied to the country.

So it seems their own web of lies is catching up with them.

Great discussion here! I agree with most of you here that children 8-9ish and up are not to young to get involved in politics and I think it is healthy for them to get involved in politics. The danger with young people being too well-informed about the ills of society and the world is that they will not feel that there is anything worth fighting for and may become apathetic. So, to some extent, I agree that children (depending on age) should be "protected" so that they can grow up secure and feeling the world is a good place and retain spirit to make change as adults, avoid APATHY.

There is a very similair debate here also relating to children and politics, click on the flag:

Let me ask you something. Have you been put into an uncomfortable position for a long time? Is it really not as bad as they say it is? How about water boarding? Tried that? ... Even the Evangelicals are against torture.

When was the last time you were in your backyard completely naked with a group of armed men surrounding you, yelling at you, while holding back aggressive, large dogs that want to rip off your face?

The world sucks, and is an ugly place. No amount of sunshine and flower BS will make this a safer world. "Being nice" to the bad guys won't make them "nice" to us, and never will. Evil needs to be eradicated, sometimes by force. The only reason this make you liberal pukes uncomfortable is the fact that you have no guidelines for defining "evil" and are worried that you may at some point be defined "evil" as well... If you hate the US and Bush so much, go somewhere else, as you lack the majority to change things here. Thankfully, there are still enough sane people here to override the lunatic fringe liberals.

This protest was a student (grade school - college) protest just as much as it was one for adults. I spoke to some of the kids at this rally and they were there on their own volition. They asked their parents to take a day off school, or had ditched for the day. What they all had in common was an opinion of the war and Chimpy the cowboy monkey. ALL were concerned about their own futures if this war doesn't end and/or spreads. Sure their parents are likely responsible for some of information they receive, but the results of an ongoing war were very real to them.

Stop wasting your time with the meaningless stuff and start giving a rat's ass that your country is being led by a monkey. Do something about it!
Seriously...

Glad to see everyone exercising their freedom of speech here. Although I disagree with the sign (and I wonder what children learned from Clinton hehe), I hope you ALL are showing support to the men and women in uniform fighting this war. At this point, we should all stop arguing about Bush and start focusing on what the Presidential candidates are doing and saying today. We can't change what's in the past. Let's change the future! VOTE for what you believe in. And please ... stop calling each other names. It only shows that you lack the vocabulary to give an intelligent opposing argument. Bravo Clonny! I hope you continue getting involved and documenting our history in photographs, no matter how much it seems to rile up the opposition. We (of the opposing view) need to be riled up!

....why are we not all out there demonstrating and raising hell - including myself? Although I did go to every demonstration against the war we are still fighting. But that was not and is not enough. Terrible things happen when fear reins -- it is time to wake up. We are all hiding behind our troops which we claim to support while driving gasoline gobbling SUV's plastered with 'Support Our Troops' stickers and continuing living the comfortable life. Great!

Even American children, barring manipulation by parents to exploit their naivete towards politics, are aware that Bush/Cheney regime is so deeply corrupt it threatens the stability and harmony of the world civilization.

Bush, Cheney, Joe Lieberman, Donald Rumsfeld, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, John Bolton, Dov Zakheim, Bill Kristol, Rudy Giuliani and countless high-ranking Neocon warhawks are traitors of the highest order and should be hung at the gallows for the crimes against humanity and high treason subverting U.S. Constitution.

Same apply for the Elitist oligarchy ie David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger.

Fucking losers bringing their goddamn KIDS into this! KIDS can't be political, she has no goddamn idea what's going on.

"

Fun with an F-1 you need to really think about youth. This kid isn't 5, this kid is old enough to fully understand what the sign says and means. AND maybe if YOU were paying attention, you'd realize that those are things that Bush is teaching our youth- at least any youth that pay attention to current events."

Are you kidding? Most 14 year olds don't even understand politics and you think an 10 OR 11 YEAR OLD would?

We weren't in Vietnam to save lives but to serve our own interests. You cry about the millions of civilians who died at the hands of the communists but what about the cities that were flattened by American bombs or the villages pillaged and ripped apart by U.S. forces.

You seemed so concerned about the Iraqis but they're dying because we're there dropping bombs on them. It's not about getting back "lost political power." Let's be honest. This war is already lost. This is really about saving face and getting out in a dignified manner. How many more thousands of civilians and hundreds of U.S. soldiers must die so that those in power don't have to admit that they've made a mistake of going in an undeclared war?

She looks like she could be between 12 and 15 years old... certainly old enough to start forming political opinions. If she did not make the sign herself, the person who made it could have explained what the sign was about.

First, to Clonny - Excellent shot sir. Found it on Digg. Congrats on front paging.

Second, to the folks like nyctreeman - you people need to figure out how badly that George and crew have screwed things up for us internationally. Whether you like it or not, we, as Americans, do *not* own or have rights to the rest of the world, though you and your ilk believe we do. We have entirely destabilized the Middle East, and it is but a short time until the area will collapse, leaving you putting $8/gallon gas into your gas-loving F-350. But by then a Democrat will be in power, and it will all be that person's fault. Right?

Jackass.

Thanks to those with positive comments on the photo. It's nice to see this photo hit Digg and Reddit and stir some debate.

From an earlier comment I made in this thread:
"This protest was a student (grade school - college) protest just as much as it was one for adults. Sure their parents are likely responsible for some of information they receive, but the results of an ongoing war were very real to them."

So before folks assume kids can't have an intelligent opinion about something maybe try talking to them.

Awesome photo! It gives me hope for the future, no matter what the right-wing clods here think. Can't stand the message? Attack the messenger, same old GOP playbook.

What a great photo. The way you framed the thumbs up, and capturing the girl's eyes just peeking over the sign are fabulous. And doing it in black & white makes it more powerful. Somehow reminds me of old Vietnam protests. And obviously the message is pretty provocative based on all of the comments here. Nice job.

Shame on Karl Rove for getting this idiot elected President.
And shame on the clueless, shortsighted, un-involved voters
that put him in office TWICE no less.

Great job on this photo. There are a couple things I'd like changed, for instance being able to see more of the girl's face (she looks like she's smiling,) and the thumbs up is in the way of the full message. Obviously this wasn't staged so it'd be hard to fix all those. But shooting in Black and white is just brilliant. I think it really adds to the powerful message in this photo (not the one on the sign for Digg crowd.)

This is a prime example of a photo that tells a story, or even several stories. Good job.

Wow. 187 600 views! That right there tells you what a powerful picture this is.

And some of the comments in these comments tell you what a scary place America is to live in.

My one hope for the girl is that she's forming her own political opinions. A little piece of me dies every time I see a child holding up a sign at a gay rights event that says "Fa** burn in hell", or some equally vicious sign outside an abortion clinc or any number of signs at causes protested by the religious right. I couldn't condone that in good conscience without considering the implications of this particular child's sign. So I hope we're hearing her words and not the one's of her parents. If we are, then she gets a thumbs up from me too!

@aloha.suckers!!
I think we should be focusing on candidates that want to keep us in Iraq forever, buddy up with corporate America, and weaken our liberties -- among other things. If you're not sure who stands closest to your views you can try out this site www.dehp.net/candidate/.

@epicxero
I agree with what you wrote. I did speak with many of the kids at the rally and they clearly understood the consequences of this war. Sure, they probably receive information from friends and family, but they made the effort to act on it.

@ Everyone else
Thanks for the comments!
