spent a few hours with swordmakers, or "kamis", in kathmandu. they make the traditional nepali knife called the "khukuri", famous as the weapon of the "ghorkas" who fought, and continue to fight, with distinction in the British and Indian armies. "Kami" is both an occupational distinction and a caste in the Hindu religious hierarchy. Thus, Kamis are born into their trade and practice it with pride.
