Great shot! I love it.

How do other people see this pic with the kids not wearing any helmet?

I [i am the mom in the pix] guess i was a bit enthused. we'd been waiting for this bike for years. and to markkphilip, if it helps assuage anything, I do have helmets that actually fit for all of them but they were so eager to jump on. And while I am too acquainted w/ the neurological risks even a small ding can bring, this thing loaded as it is moved only by my legs goes VERY slowly...and probably you've seen the dialog posted I think here earlier about the U.S. helmet vs. not vs. European way of biking life. I lived w/ the Dutch for 2 years so maybe was slightly assimilated. Todd and Dean, we took it in the rain today. Turns out the rain cover is NOT a big hit w/ the passengers after the mm's run out. The looks we get --much less w/ the 4 kids each w/ a Long's balloon flying. Should've made life space for that deal b/c these things will be flying here.

I've been getting SO MUCH crap from people in my community who have either viewed this photo or seen me in person on this bak w/ the 4 kids re: the endless helmet debate. Are there any physicians out there [ I have a number of emergency med people in my family that I've also polled] who can attest that I [or my helmetless offspring] am more at neurological risk for riding MAYBE 5 miles/hour on a bicycle that I am riding in a motor vehicle? One of the joys of this conveyance for me is there doesn't have to be any strapping, donning of armor, etc. Then again, there is CA helmet law.

sorry catherine. touchy subject, yes. online at least, i've found wikipedia's treatment of the issue pretty good at getting the discussion beyond anecdotal hearsay: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_helmet#The_helm et_debate

Wow Catherine. Don't worry about all the crap people are giving you about the lack of helmets. I think people are way too over zealous on this subject. Yes, I wear a helmet, and make my kids wear one whenever they are on wheels, but one quick Bakfiets ride sans helmet was certainly not going to kill them. There is a big passionate debate (one of many that have taken place on this subject) going on right now at bikeportland.org because the city of Vancouver, Washington is considering making helmets required for all people on bikes, Rollerblades, or scooters, regardless of age.

Todd, Thanks for the link to the wikipedia article. I am definitely interesting in seeing some writing that goes "beyond anecdotal hearsay."

Oh and Catherine, if it makes you feel any better, my wife (pictured below) had sympathy for you when she saw people trouncing on you with their comments about the helmets...

HEy folks.

Dont worry about the helmet too much. Nobody in the Netherlands uses one anyway.

But please please please, pretty please with sugar on top use the straps. If you have to brake unexpectedly (and you will !!!!) you'll send the kids flying out of the bakje. Please. I'm not kidding. I once had a near-accident with some old lady who ignored a red light, if my kids had not been strappen in I would have hurled both of them out of the seat as those Shimano brakes _really_brake_

Yes... the straps are definitely a good thing. My only complaint about the straps is their design (or lack there of). Unless they have made recent advancements, the straps on the bakfiets we used have a long way to go until they approach the convenience of those we find in our car seat straps these days. They are very difficult to adjust from one child to another and not easy to get on.

A simple five point harness like those in the car seats today would be a big improvement for the bakfiets.

Maybe I'm still on the honeymoon, seeing as I've only owned this bak for a couple of weeks, but can words even capture how much i LOVE this machine? Granted, I am a sucker for good equipment but I am also a machine snob, esp. when it comes to bikes. So it does have to be GOOD. And this bike rocks. At last, even w/ the 4 kids, I am FREE. Helmets or not. No, I am not compensated in any way to say any of this. Please get me a sun shield thingy b/f the sun hits full bore b/c I will sweat, burn, and pant but I am not willing to retreat to my minivan.

@npGREENWAY : yeah, the straps used are the same as the ones on GMG Kinderzitjes, and they are hard to adjust AND they tangle if you don't keep them closed. They do a decent job though.

@ccb2008: Believe me, the feeling will last :) This bike makes me happy. It does.

This bike makes US happy. It does. The Mizée household is happy to be borrowing our favorite bike again for a while. I rode it home from Todd's house in Vancouver, Washington on Sunday and experienced the joy again. Yesterday I picked up the kids from school in it. We have just purchased a Brooks saddle for it that we will transfer to our own bakfiets once we save up enough cash for the rest of the bike. The kids are ecstatic and I'm pleased that my wife was happy to "carpool" or should I say "bikepool" 5 kids to school on it Monday. :o)

About the straps:
I found that if you unscrew them and feed one of the straps through the top and through the lower openings of the clip, they are much easier to adjust...
But please use lock-tight when you screw in again!

Does anyone know an East Coast source for these? We are a one-car family about ready to make the leap to a no-car family and I could see one of these being super-helpful.

I think there used to be a dealer in Vermont.... but I can't seem to find a link to it right now. The Dutch Bicycle Company Seattle will be opening a shop in Chicago soon. That might be the closest thing to an East Coast dealer at this point.
