This adapter will also be of interest to taller pilots of the bakfiets. As a 6'4" person, I find that the pedals are closer than is optimal. Being able to move the seat back a little further seems like the easiest way to solve that.
Pricing on the adapter would be interesting to know.

i thought the best way to make the pedals further away was to raise the saddle :-) are you at the max extension point? what more setback does is keeps it easy to get a stabilizing foot down while (a) keeping proper leg extension and (b) not dropping the bottom bracket so much that it might bottom out over curbs etc.
note that early production runs of the van andel bakfiets had a seatpost like this, with a sharp turn in it. this is thus the as-designed state -- that's what i wanted to experience. electra's and other fashionable "foot forward" frame designs also feature this kind of offset, only they do it by moving the BB forward of the seat tube within the frame, while this approach has it at the top. they are geometrically equivalent. the net effect is a virtual seat tube angle that decreases as the saddle is raised.
too many of the seatposts broke at the turn, so they switched to plain posts. I don't know how durable my approach is going to prove, especially for heavier riders. note that the adaptor requires a plain post, not the micro-adjust sort that you've got. they run $15.

Hello, do you fancy adding this here?
It's a corker.

We (well actually Todd) did this to "our" bakfiets and it has been one of the best decisions yet. I can't tell you how much more comfortable it has made the bike to ride. I never hit my knees on the box anymore! Thanks Todd!
Todd, can you please add this to our goup? Bakfiets -- The Dutch Cargo Bike. I think it would be really helpful for others.
Thanks again!

I love the B135s, they're are really over the top - but they're great!

After a successful box bike tour last year, I'm looking for ways to approve the experience this year, with the next trip happening in late April. As a first step, I just got a new Brooks Flyer saddle. I'm particularly looking for modifications that aren't extremely time-consuming or permanent, so I can easily switch it back to a "city bike" that my wife can ride when the tour is over. The other change I'll repeat again this year is switching over to SPD pedals for the tour.
I was considering something to help climbing... possibly aero bars for the ability to lean forward and rest or push harder into the pedals.
Anything more to say about this option since it's been a couple of years.
It seems like an interesting alternative to further modifying the front end of the cockpit.

nothing new to report. most people with 1.0 bakfietsen like the effect. i don't want to exaggerate the "better climber" claim, though. i think the conventional advice to make a bakfiets a better climber would be to shift things in the opposite direction: forward saddle, but bars much lower and further forward. maybe mid-bak...

Hi!
Any tips on where I can buy this type of adapter??
cleverchimp (20 months ago | reply)
Brompton dealers. We (Clever Cycles) have them. Email info@clevercycles.com . Need to know your seatpost diameter unless you already have a plain-top sort (doesn't work with micro-adjust posts).

My seatpost is 25.4cm (one inch) diameter at the frame, but the top 1.5 inches it narrows, where the saddle mounts (like the seatpost in the photo). Do the adapters come in different sizes?
The reason I want the saddle farther back, is because I recently put a Schwinn "no pressure" saddle on the bike, and it feel much too far forward for efficient pedaling.

If your seatpost narrows at the top as in the photo, then you don't need another seatpost. The adapter should work with what you have.

Todd, do you sell a lot of these? Any recommendation on maximum rider weight?
