Skateboarding Through Water

Skateboarding Through Water by Christiaan L.
Skateboarding home, I see a big puddle coming up. Deep enough to make a cool effect, and just not too deep to submerge my skateboard. I grab my camera out of my pocket and speed up. I pre-focus the camera on my skateboard, and rush into the puddle, make this 1 photo, and im out of the puddle again. The water was made bluer as you can see in below comments.

I added english translation to the tutorial post below of how I made this image in Photoshop, as this was only in Dutch first :)

Mooie foto!

Bedankt Jos!

Thanks Jos!

Graag deel ik dat...

I would like to share that (how I made this)

Even zoeken waar ik de originelen heb... 07-09-2003 :)

Lets see where I have the originals... 07-09-2003 :)

I have uploaded the photo for ease of viewing, and linked here. Click the photos for an enlargement.

Origineel
Origineel

This is the original photo, as you can see, a little flat, grey, and the water doesnt really look exciting, or splashing.

Beetje Photoshop
Stap 2

Clearly already edited, I probably changed the curves, with control + M, to brighten the light tones, and to darken the dark ones. This sometimes has the effect of a polarisation filter on an SLR.

Eindresultaat
Stap 3

To get this step, I took a polygonal lasso tool in step 2, (or magnetic lasso tool), and selected all around my skateboard and leg, and then inverted the selection because its less work than selecting all the water.

Press control + U, and click on colorize, or alt + O, and shove the bar around 250 I think, to give the selected area a nice (overdone) blue watercolour. Maybe I still increased the saturation as well, so that the blue water is even more colourful, and that was about it.

Thanks all! I had about 10 seconds to prepare for this shot, skateboarding normally along the road, I saw the puddle, sped up whilst grabbing the camera from my pocket and clicked the button halfway in, and when I shot through the puddle I let go. I stopped skateboarding to have a good look at the shot and was amazed.

Fun and splashy... did the camera survive? Great work, the picture tells a story. then again, what are we rating? the original picture or the post processing skills? You got skill!

Yep, the camera survived because I was just holding it in my hands in front of my chest aimed downwards.

And about your question: I always that what is posted. The end result. So if its been post processed I rate that too. And if someone explicately says it hasnt been post-processed, I rate it that way.

Im also glad you think its not overdone, I was fearing that some people might find it too saturated, but then again, I guess everyone has their taste and opinion and if one out of 10 thinks its too saturated that doesnt mean I should adjust my style :)

I am going to take your comments at face value and trust that you really did take this shot while skateboarding through a puddle of water. It is not that I doubt you, but it is kind of hard to believe. If so, it is really a fantastic shot. I know how hard motion shots are. The color is a little artificial, but I don't think it is bothersome. The sharpness of the skateboard is great, and the motion effect of the water is great as well. Having your own leg in the shot gives the picture relevence. Good job!

@Skycaptaintwo: How else could I have made this photo? :) I was as amazed and unbelieving as you are, when I first saw how well this had turned out. After the PS work, this became one of my top faves, and it always generates a few "Wow"s whenever I show it to people. It was just a very lucky shot, that didnt really take much skill, mainly the knowledge of prefocussing so that you dont miss the moment, and having the idea, or seeing what I saw coming ahead. I still have more shots of water splattering off of the wheels if you want to see them, but they are way less impressive :P

Oh yeah, and you need to be able to skateboard through water :P

Ah, bearings are made to be replaced every now and then... I use high quality bearings that are about as water/sand/dust proof as you can get, and also have rims that keep water out, covering the bearings up :) In the period that I took this pic I would buy bearings every 6 months or so to keep rolling with minimal friction... and maximum speed! :)
