Tallinn, Estonia 028 - Catedral Alexander Nevsky/ Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is an orthodox church in the Tallinn Old Town, Estonia. It was built to a design by Mikhail Preobrazhensky in a typical Russian Revival style between 1894 and 1900, during the period when the country was part of the Russian Empire. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is Tallinn’s largest and grandest orthodox cupola cathedral. It is dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky who in 1242 won the Battle of the Ice on Lake Peipus, in the territorial waters of present-day Estonia. The current Russian patriarch, Alexis II, started his priestly ministry in the church.
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral crowns the hill of Toompea where the Estonian folk hero Kalevipoeg is said to have been buried according to a legend. (It should be noted that there are many such legendary burial places of him in Estonia.) The cathedral is disliked by many Estonians as a reminder of Russian domination. The Estonian authorities scheduled the cathedral for demolition in 1924, but the decision was never implemented. The church has been meticulously restored since Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
La Catedral de Alexander Nevsky es una iglesia ortodoxa en el casco antiguo de Tallin, Estonia. Se
construyó a partir de un diseño de Mikhail Preobrazhensky en un típico
estilo Renacimiento ruso entre 1894 y 1900, período cuando el país
formaba parte del Imperio Ruso. Esta la más grande iglesia de Tallin y
tiene la mayor cúpula para una catedral ortodoxa. Está dedicada a San
Alexander Nevsky que en 1242 ganó la Batalla del hielo en el lago
Peipus, en las aguas territoriales de la actual Estonia. El actual
Patriarca ruso, Alexis II, comenzó su ministerio sacerdotal en la
iglesia.
La Catedral de Alexander Nevsky corona la colina de Toompea, donde -de
acuerdo a una leyenda-, el héroe popular estonio Kalevipoeg se dice
que fue enterrado. (Cabe señalar que éste es solo uno de los
muchoslegendarios lugares de enterramiento que se le atribuyen en
Estonia). La catedral es mal vista por muchos estonios por ser un
recordatorio de la dominación de Rusia. Las autoridades estonias
previeron la demolición de la catedral en 1924, pero la decisión nunca
fue aplicada. La iglesia ha sido meticulosamente restaurada desde que
Estonia recuperó su independencia de la Unión Soviética en 1991.
