      Oh, homesick,
that's true, he is just awesome.

(P.S. He was charged $US 245 to be allowed on board. I paid for him. He was profoundly thankful :))

My cat would have went insane! She hates other people and traveling...so my guess is she'll never take a ride in an airplane.

Just after our arrival we stayed a few day at our friends' house. The cat demonstrated a 'miracle of discipline, situational awareness, and comprehension'.

Folks even asked us if we put the cat on a special 'training for traveling cats' before leaving. We told them that the only thing he got was the 'internally designed crash course', and that was it. They were really interested to know more details:)

That's a well behaved cat. If four years of rampie work taught me anything, it's that most cats don't travel well. We got our little kitten (named Doxi after the caravan I fly - CGDOX) this past spring. Took her on a road trip down to Kelowna for the weekend shortly after getting her. She wasn't very happy with the whole ordeal. I didn't know cats could whine the way she whined for the eight hour duration of the trip.

      CND Aviator,

      Yeah, that's generally true.
Whenever I would happen to see a kennel with some animal (cat, dog, etc) in an aircraft pit during a preflight walk-around, I can tell for sure they almost always seem to be pretty stressed. Likewise, their masters are!

They often ask us to check and make sure their beloved pets have made it on board. Anyway, I always try to talk to them (both - pets in kennels and their owners) Don't know, if this helps:)..

Clashmaker i believe it truely helps! your passengers would feel welcomed alongwith their animals(maybe). Though animals do not like to be confined in small cage like that i can understand their stress/contempt :-/

A very well travelled cat indeed. Let's see, we have Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat, now it's Shurik the Airplane Cat. Someone's gotta write a musical about that!

When my family moved from Toronto to Victoria, we traveled across the country in a Dodge van with two cats. It was an interesting experience (especially the elk vs cat encounter in Banff)

      jathedar,

Thanks, I'll keep doing this on. In my archive there's a few pics of some of these poor fellows in aircraft pits. To be posted one day.

      thebugs,

Oh, that must have been the TRAVEL! Do you have pics from it? Have you ever heard miraculous stories about cats going missing in such travels, and then re-appearing back again after long time?

Bugs i'm all ears to hear your travel story! a flickr set on that with small commentry would be perfect! i can glue in for hrs to read it lololol

Clash, it was quite the adventure. We were in a campground with the cats on a leash, tied to trees near by. A big elk decided to walk through the campground - one cat ran up a tree, the other stood there, arched back and hissing. We thought the elk would kill her, but the big ol' beast turned and walked away.

No real photos that I can find from the trip, this happened back when I was 12 years. My dad might have some kicking around, I'll ask him.

That one is a real fun!
      Oh, thanks thebugs, I'm laughing!

By the way, if your cats are still all right (slim chance, but I should ask you anyway :), I could them in Victoria. We'll have a decent overnight there in December.

      I am envious.
I just travelled across Canada with my cat (moved to Calgary from East). I have a huge Main Coon (lynx tufts, teeth that could put any dog to a shame, temperament to match, etc.). He would not fit in such a cage, and he wouldn't pass the weight test either.

Although I was surprised (I was expecting the worse), it wasn't a picnic. Since I had to drive kitty anyway, I decided to drive a truck with my things and a trailer with SUV on it (the size of 18 wheeler abouts). It took long to drive that rig.

The cat totally freaked two times. I freaked because he freaked (also, because of the snow storm and a bad case of flu I got). At first I started stopping in a very nice hotels and I had to sneak him in (hard to do when he is in a dog-sized cage). Later - motels that didn't care.

Oh, and my cat got an extreme motion sickness. PHew.... don't want to even think about that trip. Never again. I guess I am stuck in Calgary now ;)

You are a lucky man - they don't travel well at all! If I may ask you.... how did you manage to have his business done during such a long flight? Did you have a litter box?

      Shurik is adorable!

      Clashmaker, you said
      "Yeah, that's generally true.

I somehow feel it obviously helps (at least the owners)... it's so much of a relief when you find someone being "sensible" to you. I'm sure they not only appreciate, they talk about it also.

      djipibi,

      so do I!
In the same situations! Once a lady on board asked whether we could 'bring a piece to her mind' verifying her kenelled dog is OK in the pit.. It was my turn to fly, so I told her to watch the outside from her window while I would be doing my walk-around, and expect my 'thumb up' once I've seen the dog, and it's doing all right. Sure it was, and you couldn't believe, how happy that lady looked when she saw me standing on the tarmac, signaling by 'two thumbs up' :)
