Good Morning, Steve! I've got some time and
thought I visit some of my contacts today.
What I like with this treatment is how the
sky is darkened and the lighted white walls
of the buildings stand out against it. The
viewer notices that it is processed thus not
showing the actual place so it is ok to me
that the photo looks a little unreal. What I
do not like is that the treatment lets the
image look blurred and I like it pin sharp
most of the time, but that is very much a
matter of personal preferences and also what
is actually intended with a particular photo.
But like I said, it is a great motive and
your composition is very strong, well done
again!
@Jasmic - thanks for you comment. It does
like quite over proccessed to me too. It's
definitely a style that is intended to look
unnatural. Here is a link with more info if
you're interested:
@justeet - Thanks for your input. As for the
crop, I like the one you suggested but think
I prefer not centering the spire. As it is,
it feels to me more like the viewer gets a
sense of the lighthouse looking out over the
expanse of water.
An interesting rendition. I was just
thinking about this place yesterday, and
wondering when I might get back down there.
Sunsets are so hit and miss in the winter,
but there are somer really good ones. I'd
love to be there when the sun breaks through.
Sometimes I wish I could just drive in
though, and skip the long walk. What way did
you take in?
@knotty - actually, I asked some people
around there and they said it was fine to
drive down. That's what I did. Thanks for
turning me on to this technique!
Holy crap...you can drive down there!!?? Now
I really want to head back. Everytime I've
went there I've had to walk in, which is
around 1.5 miles round trip I'm guessing. I
usually alwasy walk the way out in the dark.
No crop. The processing is really interesting
-- I wouldn't use it on very many images, but
it's a cool deviation. What it does to the
building is strikingly 3D.
yeah, crop it as justeet said - will improve
composition. great photo - the blur works nicely. good colours. lake looks excellent - the blue is so vivid!
Thanks for turning me on to the Orton
technique - the Greenlake photo I used it on
made it all the way up to #3 in Explore (not
like I care about that, well, kind of, just a
little).
I love the feel of this photo. It's cool to
capture the feeling of a place that evokes a
lot of emotion, knowing it's someplace you
can never really go to because it's an
altered reality.

wow !
I saw this explained in a photo magazine once, but the images they used to showcase the technique turned me off.
Now I HAVE to give it a try !
(or, as you put it: "Thanks for turning me on to this technique!" :) )

Very Nice! Do you recall the settings used? Did you mask off any particular areas?

Dramatic use of Orton technique. I really like the "unreal" or "dreamy" effect that this technique can provide.
Good job!

Thanks for the comments.
@Smotherbob - the original picture was edited quite a bit and already had a somewhat unreal quality. It's processing is discissed here:
Optimzing Your Setup Group.
For the Orton technique, I honestly just followed the steps from the link on the Orton page, gaussian blurring at about 25.

Thanks for the pointer to this technique. I tried it out myself and am pretty happy with the result.

@katenadine - this is the west point lighthouse at Discovery Park. If you go to the park and drive down to the beach, it is on the point.
matildaben (78 months ago | reply)
Kate, Steve, I'd definitely be up for a Discovery Park photostroll sometime. If it ever stops raining.
