Rich history: Hundreds of colorful murals cover the walls and buildings of East Los Angeles, many dating back to the 1960s and inspired by Mexican artists. The Latino-dominated area of Los Angeles is now seeking cityhood.

A group of residents has launched a campaign, including collecting petition signatures on forms such as those pictured here, to make the area a municipality governed by its own elected officials and ordinances.
