What does Fermata mean in Italian? In English, it's the name of an ever-so-naughty but utterly fantastic novel by the incomparable Nicholson Baker.

mi piace molto. ha qualcosa di futuristico e misterioso. mi fa pensare ad una città fantasma in cui transitano bus fantasmi...

lil: you're always a source of stimulating connections! Thanks for the link to Baker's novel. In Italian "Fermata" is the feminine past participle of the verb "fermare", to stop. In this photo it marks a bus stop. Baker probably refers to the "fermata" of music jargon, i.e. the prolungation of a tone or pause. In choosing the title, I was implying both meanings.

Amelie: pare di no.. ce ne sono diversi cosi' in giro per Roma. Questo in particolare e' in via Induno, alla fermata del 3/44/75/etc.
the beatrix: grazie! Ho paura che quello che hai scritto corrisponda un po' alla sensazione che io ho di Roma ;-)

In that case, Baker's title probably refers to the first meaning, 'to stop' -- the novel is about a man who has the ability to stop time.
