Radiant Bones - All Hallows Eve

Winner - 4th place Strobist Photo of the Year 2007

In celebration of the thinning of the veil between the living and the dead, I offer these images. In some ways,, these feel like totems. Coyote, Badger, Beaver and the power of life they once held and supported.

These were created using one Alien Bee B800 monolight/monoblock. The 3x5foot light box was used and was set on top of three foot high supports what included 3 foot high museum ragboard reflectors on three sides (including the side where the camera was placed.

Canon 40D, 17-40L, Gimp, OSP, platinum tints

Funny you should mention that. I have in mind a series of images of people dressed in the goth/doom idiom. The setting, of course, would also be important.

Now you know why I am interested in winning the Alien Bees ringlight. But whatever comes my way is _much_ more than I ever expected.

I love this shot. Of the four SPOY finalists revealed so far, this is my favourite. I love nature, and this is a beautiful photo of an aspect of nature rarely seen. Rather than grusome, your delicate presentation of the subject inspires awe and wonder. The juxtaposition of the hard skull against the soft background is great, and the softness is carried through to the lighting. Such soft light allows every little detail in the bone to be visible, and the low contrast tonality and composition elevates the photo beyond scientific interest to art.

What I find really fun about all this is that anyone can make this kind of image. All they need is one flash, large semi-transparent white material, and three sheets of white board (of just about any kind). Light from above and bounce light in from the sides (about a foot or foot and a half away from the subject). It's that simple.

I look forward to seeing everyone's strobe work over on the Strobist's pool.
