Cold Waters

Cold Waters

Well, it has finally happened. I now have two monitors and the color does not match. My LG has less contrast and saturation then my MacBook. Which one is right? Really, the only way to tell is with a display calibration tool. Of course, no one here sells them, I'll have to order one online. I hate ordering things online that I know so little about. I'll even pay a little more, plus taxes (10% here) to buy it at a local brick and mortar store.

Oh yeah, the picture. Somewhere between Metcalf Bottoms and the "Y" there is a narrowing of the Little River. The rapids get a bit violent. Sure, this is mild compared to some but it is more then I would want to wade though.

BTW, over at youtube I have a short video that includes this stretch of stream.

Late Morning Siesta

Late Morning Siesta

Back side of the "cove", the fawns were taking it easy. All the bucks were on the other side, near the intrance.

3 Moons plus 2

3 Moons plus 2

Last night as I headed out for dinner I was almost blinded by the brilliance of a cloudless night and a rising full moon. Once I got back ome I had to get the camera, but which lens. My 135 f2L is my sharpest lens. It is also 5 times more expensive then either of my longer zooms, both of which retail for under $200.

Over time I learned that if I shoot my zooms at f11 and then in post resize my image to about 1/2 of it's original I can get a pretty good image. But can I do the oposite? Can I shoot a picture with my 135 prime and scale it up in Photoshop and have it looking as good as the zooms at full size?

Yes and No, actually I am leaning more heavily toward No. If you compair the enlarged moon (bottom center) to the Sigma (top right) at full size you'll see the Sigma is a little bit sharper. Yes I can sharpen the enlargement but really, I can do the same with the Sigma.

So, at the end of this little experiment I have decided to keep the Sigma in my bag. It is more of a pain, having to shoot at f11 and fast shutter speeds (faster then 1/500th). On a overcast day I generally have to shoot at ISO's upwards to 3200!

There it is

There it is

So, I am rediscovering the joy of culling images our in the wild (as opposed to in my basement apt. on my desktop) when there was a flash of white flying down the river. I think this guy, or gal, is a regular. I have seen solo Blue Herons here before, same bend of the river, down Treemont rd.

This is one of the few times I wish had a longer lens, my 135mm requires me to get a lot closer then I sometimes can. Heron's are notoriously camera shy. Thankfully the trail I was following was a bit off the river bank and I had some trees giving me cover. Still I was only able to get two passable shots, this is one of them.
