Nice Design

Nice Design by Klis.
I found this marvelous cultural artifact at a $1 store in the Mission in San Francisco. Seven years later I am still in awe of how this thing got made. I'd like to think this was some snarky designer, but the actual design counterindicates. But even if it was a practical joke, how did it get past the fabricators? Did no one in the delivery chain speak English? What directive was given to the designer? Was it simply, "We need a nice design for the product," and the designer a literalist? Is there some other language/culture where this thing would sell?

I fondly imagine June Cleaver pulling it off the shelf thinking, "Now that's a nice design."

I love it so much.

reminds me of the jeans on the rack in China that have the leather labels that read "print error"

My mom made that, and she thought it was nice. Thanks for making fun of it, you jerk.

Why does it have to be some wacky foreigner with bad English skills? It's more than likely that Nice Design is just the brand name or product series.

Exactly! And how crazy would that be? As if calling it "nice design" was sufficient to make it so. Or that "nice" was the optimal sort.

I suspect it is from Japan. "Nice" and "design" are both loanwords and you see phrases like that written on a lot of things.

While English is popular in Japan, the fact that it uses cursive writing seems to indicate that it is from an English-speaking country since cursive writing isn't encountered very often outside of them.

The answer is pretty simple. It's a placeholder graphic.

Most likely this is a sample product or from a short production run of sample products. When companies shop new products to retail stores, they will add things like "nice design", or "brand", or "logo here" to show where the brand name/ pattern will eventually go.

I understand that car design studios have (or used to have) pre-made emblems, in a variety of styles, that said "Carname". A placeholder for the final, yet undermined name.

Nice find.

I'm going with the magical thinking theory. write 'nice design' on a product, and VOILA - it is a nice design

Why are you in awe? Like someone can't just decide to paint a flower and words on tupperware? Do you have more than one, and since you don't, why are you jumping to assume it was manufactured that way?

I am actually curious, is it an actual Tupperware brand product or a product made from some other company? I ask because I work for Tupperware (at World Headquarters in Orlando, FL) and I find it pretty interesting.

It doesn't have the Tupperware logo, so no.
