Horse with a ViewWhile on holiday in Islay we stayed in a cottage called Smiddy Cottage on Smaull Farm in Saligo Bay. A more beautiful place you could not find. The farm is owned by the RSPB and is managed along organic and conservation lines. Corncrake in the summer (although we were too late for these) pasture were mixed horses sheep and cattle including suckling calves and bulls. It was a wonderful place.
Uploaded on Nov 2, 2009 Stand and DivideThis amazingly tall standing stone was on Islay. Must be 4 meters. I like the naturalness of the scene even though it is all unnatural straight lines and man made....
Uploaded on Nov 2, 2009 Don't Look Now....Chris and I had been hoping to see Snow Buntings on Islay. After a week though we had not and after a particularly good but tiring day headed back to our cottage. 30 feet in front of the cottage, on the drive, not letting us drive past was this little chap. He was almost tame in the sense he was completely unafraid or even aware of us or the car. Hung around for a few days although only really clearly seen as the light faded in the evenings. It was then that the white wings we really noticeable in the dusk. Just a wonderful bird.

I have only seen Choughs twice. Once in Western Ireland where we saw two for a brief but but memorable occasion on a chimney pot, and the other was everyday on a two week holiday on Islay in Scotland. All I can say is that they are brilliant. A member of the crow family, gregarious, noisy, funny and fun to watch.

Up Up and Away in IslayBarnacle Geese are just brilliant. Well most geese are but these are especially so. This was taken on Islay in Scotland where 6,000 or so have arrived from the north to over winter. The sight and sounds of thousands of geese in flight is something that lifts the heart in a unique way. If you have never done it, plan a holiday one autumn or winter where geese overwinter and experience it. You won't regret it.
