This Gristleizer is Dead - Long Live The Gristlizer

This Gristleizer is Dead - Long Live The Gristlizer by Chris_Carter_.
Our only (and as far as we know the last) surviving original Gristleizer died today, it was Cosey's own model from 1977. We were about to start running some LFO test on it for Charles Howes, who is designing and making the new Gristleizer reproductions, when it spluttered and stopped working. No amount of coaxing, fiddling, tweaking, encouragement and new batteries would revive it. Pretty good going for a 32 year old hand-made unit but a sad day nevertheless...

sad, but not 32 years isn't a bad run for something like this. At least there are new ones coming. I know I've got the stripboard and original parts in a baggy to make a few when I get around to it...

RIP Gristleizer! I have to give my 30-something-year-old Paia CPR every now and then, so I share your pain.

I totally know what it's like to have an electronics thing die on me, very frustrating. Speaking of paia I was trying to fix my 4700 VCF; it died like all my other devices do, by too much fiddling around with the power on, so I thought I had tracked it down to the IC, so i go out and buy one... come home and desolder it and place an IC socket in there... slip the new ic in,and...NOTHING. So a little frustrated I touched around the board a little and heardsomething snap... and its started to work. it appears i broke a germanium diode in half and it worked again?! wtf.

anyways. what have you tried to do to fix it,chris? try replacing the ic's. If you worked closely off the PE guitar effect, they are just LM741's or equivelant. Also, try replacing the germanium diodes...(or breaking them!) If no nasty voltages were applied to it nothing would be dead fromthat... transistors should still be alive... are any of the caps leaking or look bloated?

RIP Gristleizer. In this age of planned obsolescence, 32 years is a truly remarkable age for a piece of electronics to live to.

Oh that's so sad. RIP Gristleizer, long have you made throbbing sounds! Is there no amount of soldering and tinkering inside that can resuscitate it?

Tell us more about these Charles Howes reproductions too!

aww, that's a bummer Chris. I'm sad too. My mother passed away suddenly this month and her funeral was on my birthday. Kind of poetic in a way.

Hope the rehearsals are going well.

We've had a LOT of really useful advice and some very nice offers to actually fix Cosey's Gristleizer. But she's decided to retire it and use one of Charles Howe's new Gristlizer reproductions instead.

Had to replace the VCA on my 4700 a couple months ago.

I'm mostly sad that my stupid Space Echo keeps dying. Needs a new motor I think, which Roland stopped supporting in 2003. So we'll need to use a custom modification.
