Freshly molted cicada

Freshly molted cicada

I'm assuming this one just molted, because I usually don't see them down close to the ground, and this one stayed still as I got very close and took it's photo. Here it looks like it's waving "hi!" The mouth part looks like an old-fashioned microphone. I also think his little antennae look like the tips of a wiry mustache. :)

Assassin Bug Nymph

Assassin Bug Nymph

The needle-looking thing on the front of its face is in fact a needle-shaped mouth part with which it stabs its prey! Not one of my favorite neighborhood bugs!

Spinyback Orb Weaver

Spinyback Orb Weaver

These spiders are incredible weavers. I had the pleasure of watching this one construct the web. So meticulous, yet efficient! The result looked constructed by an architect (unfortunately they sometimes anchor the web between a lower tree limb and the lawn, so I am a little nervous about walking into new webs when I head out into the yard).

Green Lynx spider on rose

Green Lynx spider on rose

These hunters are so beautiful and match my rose's leaves perfectly! They usually perch on the leaves and wait for flies to come to them. This one ventured onto the blossom to snag a meal.
