Victory Rolls

Victory Rolls

My girlfriend had her hair set in victory rolls at a vintage market today and asked me to take her photo - any excuse to practice portraiture with a willing subject!

Tynemouth Metro station bridge

Tynemouth Metro station bridge

The bridge between platforms at the Tynemouth Metro station - lots of lovely curves and lines!

Unfortunate water spot at the lower right, but that's entirely my fault

The Wandering Minstrel

The Wandering Minstrel

Totally rumbled trying to take a covert shot of this gentleman, but I think the picture actually benefits from his questioning expression and the eye contact. I think it might have looked better with a shallower depth of field really though, just for a bit of subject separation.

This is also testimony to how good Yashica Electro 35's are - this was shot in the upper F's, probably f/11 or f/16, clearly the cameras sharpness sweet spot. For a reasonably inexpensive camera that's older than I am, I'm very impressed with it.

Alone in a crowd

Alone in a crowd

Speaks for itself really - although I don't think it looks like being on his own is having any negative effect on his mood

Uncomfortable

Uncomfortable

Titled for how this image makes me feel.

These are genuine items from World War 2 and most likely saw active use. They utterly ooze history, but its not a time people remember fondly. The Reichsadler on the uniform (swastika and iron eagle) unsettles me in a way I can't entirely explain. While I understand that owning this stuff doesn't mean you're a Nazi, I'm really not sure why anyone would buy it and have it in their home.

Regardless, I like this photo quite a lot for the various textures and the quirkiness of the mask/helmet - especially after I spotted a heart-shaped reflection in the right lens of the gas mask.
