Spirit of Detroit

Spirit of Detroit by ChicagoEye.
The great public sculpture by Marshall Fredericks outside of the Coleman Young center in Detroit. It cost $40,000 to build.

Pardon my negativism, but tho probably well intentioned this seems to be an awkward piece. Fredericks also is an odd choice for a building named after Coleman Young but I know nothing of the situation.l

Hey Ted: I'm thinking the angle I took might have lead to it appearing awkward. Good point regarding Fredricks; but the piece was built in 1958, years before Coleman Young became mayor.

Most people use the color version of this icon. They're nice, but after a while they tend to look "touristy" and "postcard pretty." Using black and white and a bit more grain gives this photo the kind of grit you'll allegedly find all over Detroit.
