The menu is a triumph of information design that would make even Tufte proud. The circles are representative of three aspects of each course:

Their left/right position relative to an imaginary center line represents their position on a flavour axis of sweet to tart.

The size of each circle repesents the size of the portion.

The darkness of the circle represents the intensity of the flavour in the course.

	MrPlow42 says: Great concept, but Tufte would not be proud because it uses the radius of a circle to convey information. If you double the radius of a circle, the viewer thinks it has grown by more than double. Our brains see the area of the circle, not the radius. The area increases as a function of the square of the radius, the famous Pi R Squared. Now, if this were a pastry menu, that would be funny. Posted 31 months ago. ( permalink )

	junesix says: Very elegant and quite in keeping with Grant Achatz' "mad scientist" cuisine. There's certainly ways that this could be improved (add a sweet-tart axis representation, put a numberical value in the rings for flavor or size) but at some point you're trading the elegance in simplistic design for cold, analytical IA. I'm also wondering if these rings are actually supposed to be plates, ie. white plate with dark rim. Thus portion size = plate size. Posted 31 months ago. ( permalink )

The point of Tufte is to maximize understanding of the data being displayed. This may or may not require an explanation of how the data is being persented. Posted 31 months ago. ( permalink )

	chesh2000pro says: austins: it's going to cost you a fortune either way :) I suppose Tuffte might not be proud - though I think of the Napolean's March poster that he trumpets as being one of the best pieces of information design he has seen. I have a framed copy hanging on my wall and I know that I have to explain it to most people who ask about it. Once they get it - they really get it - but before then it just looks like a bunch of lines. Posted 31 months ago. ( permalink )
