kitchen garden

I read your description and then sat in this chair and took it all in...or at least could picture the whole thing in my mind!
ahhhhhhh.
wow!
kitchen garden by *Susie*.
A glorious spring morning in the kitchen garden. I've pruned the ceanothus into an arch shape over the entrance into this area, it's a spectacular sight at this time of year. Forget-me-nots are at their best, chives flower in the little raised herb garden, the raspberries are smothered in flower buds, early lettuces are ready for harvest. How I love this time of year!

Love the colours here, and your productive garden has a good old fashioned natural feel about it. I think it needs to be transferred whole to Chelsea - a winner!

Wonderful shades of blues you have there and I can confirm the Californian Lilac is one of the most spectacular blue flowers around. I had one at the other house but my attempts to grown one here were unsuccessful - it doesn't like it. That is a beautiful shrub though. I love the chives in the foreground... they are pretty flowers without a doubt and I like the smell! It looks - as usual - very welcoming!

Hi Pat, thanks for that, this is just about my favourite place to sit at this time of year, I positively gloat over all those plants coming up!

Hello Penny, we both think that we've created the kind of garden our grandparents might have had - bet this would raise some eyebrows at Chelsea!

Carol, many thanks, the ceanothus is a stunner at this time of year but it's not terribly exciting for the rest of the year

Zixi, the ceanothus really loves it here, it took off and became huge so quickly that I've had to prune it really hard - I almost took it out but it when I got it into an an arch it looked so much better and it does provide some wonderful colour at this time of year

I took another shot of this area which was a better photo but it didn't show the ceanothus and veggie patch

Debbie, many thanks, I can only get all these blues together like this at this time of year, it's an extravaganza with this area and bluebells and cornflowers and grape hyacinths - we have other blue flowers later on in the summer but they never quite have this kind of intensity

Hi Country Dreaming, thanks for the nice words - I think I'd find it hard sharing the garden if I ever started doing b&b!

Art, I'm honoured, now added!

Ilja, nice to hear from you, there's something special about that first lettuce isn't there? I took a big chance this year and sowed a lot of stuff very early, this part of the garden is so sheltered that even if there is a frost it rarely reaches it and it's really paid off - we have early peas and broad beans well on their way already plus a whole bunch of other stuff looking promising

Hi Jackie, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your photos, thanks for the kind words

Hi Jolli, I'm glad you like it - alas no fairies but lots of frogs so maybe a frog prince or two?

Hello Jen, not long since you saw it first hand - I'm with you that May is the best month, it's when it all suddenly takes off

Sue, that's a beautiful shot, thank you!

Hi UncleWilco, many thanks for the invite and kind words

Oh Susie. Your garden is inspirational.I could sit amongst all those glorious blues and greens and all my cares would drift away.My new "old" garden has very few shrubs or flowers and we have been very depressed as the beautiful garden at our former home has been totally bulldozed to make way for 5 house lots.We have been in mourning for all our beloved trees and shrubs and flowers. Your garden pictures have given me hope of transforming our garden here into something special in the years to come!!Thank you for sharing.

BJ, thank you so much, you always say such lovely things!

Lenka, thank you so much - I was glad to see you've tracked down a marsh marigold, next spring it will look spectacular! I'm hoping now that the water lily will take hold and we'll see some flowers this summer

PerennialGirl, many thanks for the vist and nice words, much apreciated

Sooze, that must be absolutely heart breaking, all the love and attention lavished on your beautiful garden and then to see it bulldozed. But your new house is in such a beautiful setting and at least you don't have to live with other people's mistakes if you're starting out from scratch - we've had our place for 12 years and for at least the last 6 the garden has looked really established - but it's a lifelong job, there are always things I want to change. I'm glad you like our garden, it's a real pleasure to share it with like minded people here on Flickr. Special thoughts for Brie and Maria

Dear Susie, Your ceanothus arch is so wonderful! It is really fantastic blue! It is hard to find some words to describe how i like your blue kitchen garden!

It is too cold to plant ceanothus in Beijing, is it also named"California lilac"? I like it very much!
Posted 12 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

*Susie*  Pro User  says:

Caiwamzi, thank you for those kind words. Yes, it is also called california lilac. I do not know enough about the climate in Beijing to answer you but my understanding is that it does best in a warm sheltered position with moderate winter temperatures. It has a reputation for being relatively short lived but this may just be due to not being in the right location. Our kitchen garden is very sheltered, we do not get many nights much below freezing in the winter and any frost rarely reaches this far towards the house.

I have used your beautiful image--and attributed it--in an article that I have written abut how to start a kitchen garden. I also linked to your beautiful set at the end of the article. I hope that this is OK with you.
Your beautiful garden is so inspiring, please let me know if this is a problem at all and I will remove it immediately. Wishing for you a prosperous and magical growing season!

Cheers,
