This elegant garment was made by designer Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949), a Spanish-born designer who worked primarily in Venice, Italy. His stenciled velvet was the height of fashion to accompany his pleated silk Delphos dress. He and his French designer wife, Henriette, lived at his shop in the Palazzo Pesaro-Orfei in Venice. His New York shop was managed by Elsie MacNeill – both were considered highly fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s.
