Excavation, Day 5

Office window
Water feature on the wall
Isn't your bedroom like, right here?
urgent concrete removal. At 5am. Across from the bedroom. See note to left.
As a matter of fact, YES. My head was right about... here.
One of three tiny windows above our headboard.
perfect spot for a burglar to lie in wait
Excavation, Day 5 by Erin!.
This is the alley between the main house (left) and the guest house (right). A week ago it was a concrete sidewalk and some scrub bushes along the sides. We're putting pavers down over the whole walkway with big planters along the walls for herbs and other plants that will do well out of direct sunlight. There's a hanging water feature going on the guest house wall across from the office window, too. (See notes.)

And there's going to be a tall curved wall that cuts across the guest house patio. I... that was Randy's go-ahead. The best part about this is that Randy had to cut through the existing patio in order to make a path for the wall, so now he's got the house jacked up. With a jack. The house. On a jack. Holding up the house. On a block of wood. On some dirt.

A jack.

Randy is Randy. I told him he had no business out there cutting through concrete, so he just got up reeaaaally eeeaarly to do it so I couldn't nag him. This morning he did the same thing: I told him he needed to hire someone to chop a tree down but he wanted to do it himself with his chainsaw. The last time Randy used his chainsaw he almost lost a hand and had to drive himself to the hospital. But this morning, sure as shit, he was up with his chainsaw in the dark. Chopping down a tree. Kicking fate in the pants.

(Randy is awesome.)

A few years ago the house we were living in needed a new foundation, so they jacked us up for a few days, chipped out the old shit, poured in a new one, and gently let us back down. I'm really glad we didn't have an earthquake in the middle of that operation.

See, who had that idea FIRST? Some guy out there scratching his head: "Yeah, I mean, it should work." That's pretty ambitious.

Allen's parent's basement is held up by jacks. Believe it or not, I guess they work? It's been like that in their house for 20 years and it's totally OK, I guess.

Also, I love that randy is up at the crack of dawn, OUTSIDE YOUR BEDROOM WINDOW, jack hammering concrete.

I love your boyfriend. He is awesome x100000.

I know, right? I guess he knows me well enough to guess that I'm not going to get out of bed to tell him to quit it.

I can't imagine an entire basement being held up by jacks. But maybe that's just because when Randy sets up a jack, there's a pretty good chance that sucker's crashing to the ground.

Randy! (you have to say that in the "Newman!" way that Seinfeld used to)

Damn, that's brilliant. Getting up at 5am to chainsaw and jackhammer in the dark. I'd be spitting mad.... as I pull the pillow over my head and go back to sleep. I, like you, would be powerless against the evil forces of 5am jackhammering.

I actually do say it like that pretty much every time. Or I just call him "Squishy". I don't know why.

When I was 4 they jacked up a house across the street, put wheels under it, and took it away. I was damaged for life.

Yeah, it makes me wonder why we had a jack that big lying around in the first place.

you probably didn't have a jack just "lying around'... wear a hard hat at all times is my advice. Your bathroom ceiling may crumble down on you any day now

The house we were renting had 10 or more hydraulic jacks in the basement. Holding up the house. I was so ready to get out of there.

If you would collect some of your stories and put a title to the collection, it is publishable. Hilarious. Better than Dave BArry and he gets PAID to write. Your turn of phrase is so, so, what is the word I want...not decorative, not twisted, just funny and I CAN SEE THE PICTURES! You go, girl.
