Jellied Pineapple Rings

from the "Golden Circle Tropical Recipe Book".

Here's the original: www.flickr.com/photos/helenmorgan/100252159/ I really should have done this up right with the nautical theme!

Did it taste nice?! Yep, you're right about the green. Back in the good old days they probably used food colourings which are banned now! What jelly flavour was it? Lime?

Well done! I love the power of flickr!

      i am giggling yet curious...

    3. Miss Retro Modern (74 months ago | reply)

It was lime - but not 'Jell-o'. I used an agar substitute. It looked really green before it set but it sort of lost something in the fridge overnight. It tastes fine :-)...it's merely the presentation that's appalling!

      ayeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

this looks like something from a hunter thompson- esque LSD nitemare

    6. Miss Retro Modern (59 months ago | reply)

      But a tasty one, pwbaker!

    7. Helen Morgan (59 months ago | reply)

Glad to hear the memory of its taste has remained all this time!

    8. Miss Retro Modern (59 months ago | reply)

Yes! It makes me realize it's been a long time since I've molded something!

    9. Sedanman [deleted] (53 months ago | reply)

LOL! I love the colors, but this remind's me of trying to un-can canned cranberries at Thanksgiving, and they come out with the ribbed can shape on the sides!

Nothing says 'class' like the outline of a tin can, Sedanman!

      I love the strawberry flourishes!

    12. Sedanman [deleted] (53 months ago | reply)

"Flourishes"? They look like stars to me. Between this thread and HSH's, I'm really getting a vocabulary work-out today!

    13. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

Thanks, Miss Sharon! This was clearly taken before my days of obsessing over everything I post to Flickr ... I would've used a tablecloth, otherwise!

    14. *julia (53 months ago | reply)

Wow, you improvised the lettuce and strawberries?! I'm impressed!

    15. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

I went with what I had :-) I'm glad you approve!

You gals are making me hungry. *dinner break*

    17. sparkleneely (53 months ago | reply)

I think yours look even BETTER than the original. The pink Fiesta is such a nice compliment to the green...

    18. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

Sedanman - You should've looked at my Ham and Egg Combo before you left! You'd be sure to find it a remarkably effective diet aid, I think!

sparkleneely - Thanks! That's the only dinner sized vintage Fiesta plate I've found so far. I refuse to pay $20 a plate at antique stores!

    19. Monimania (53 months ago | reply)

Oh my!!!! OH MY!!! that looks.......I dont think I could get anyone to eat it at my house, you did a great job and the colors are great!!!

    20. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

Monimania - I think this is by far the most palatable mid-century cooking I've done!

Scrubbing my tub in preparation for some guests next week was enough to curb my appetite, MRM! Now I have to go wash the kitchen floor next.....

      THE NEW PINK/ROSE FIESTAWARE....

oddly enough, my mom used to make a fantastic ambrosia...usually they are vomit city...but somehow my mom used to make a good one...i'd bring it to potlucks and folks would flip out...i dunno if she has the receipe still...i will try to see if she'll make it....i know we have mandrian orange slices in the cupboard...but alas, off to pick up minimarshmellows...

If anyone's interested, I did a Lileks-style breakdown of this book years ago:
      Right here.

      Recognised the dish INSTANTLY :)

    25. *julia (53 months ago | reply)

Amy, that was HILARIOUS. MRM, you really picked the only even slightly edible recipe out of that book. Man alive, some of the recipes in Tropical Magic in Cooking go straight to the "magically revolting" hall of fame!

    26. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

addadada - I think an ambrosia would be a perfect addition to the group!

Amy Mebberson - Ha! That WAS funny! I also noticed that the cookbook sports an excellent example of the ever popular olive eye!

Julia - You are sooo right! I had no idea what else was in there, but I wouldn't touch any of that stuff!

    27. High Steel Heels (53 months ago | reply)

      This actually looks edible!

    28. Sedanman [deleted] (53 months ago | reply)

Yes, it does HSH, but the question is, to slice, or to pick it up and take a bite out of it's can-shaped jell-o goodness?

MRM - I just re-read your comments under the photo - don't you think a TIki theme would be more appropriate than nautical?

    29. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

      HSH - It really was!

Sedanman - I enjoy the thought of picking this whole thing up and taking a bite! Inelegant, surely, but certainly fun!

I was merely thinking of being true to the original, but a Tiki theme would work marvellously, of course! Do you know, though - I have not a single piece of Tiki!!

    30. *julia (53 months ago | reply)

Neither do I, MRM. Every time I contemplate getting a mug or two, I think ahead to the consequences of having an entirely new and consuming collection. I do think these tiny (though brand new) "mugs" are cute ... I love the colors! (I happened to have this bookmarked already, ha ha!)

    31. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

Oh, those are perfect, Julia! The colours are great!

I don't know if I could really swing another collection, either, but I'd certainly start if I had those (new or not)! They'd look so nice with my pineapple mold!

    32. Sedanman [deleted] (53 months ago | reply)

I didn't realize that was fiestaware until I saw the obove comment- I've got a blue one just like it. I can't bear to use it as "regular" dishware and scratch it up, so it's part of my wooden tropical fruit display.

Oh Julia, must you tempt me with the mugs? I know you're not planning on coming to Seattle, but if you ever do you must go to Archee McPhee's! (there's even a flickr pool for them!) I've resisted collecting anything but vintage automobilia/kustom culture, Tiki, and Peanuts stuff. Not only do I not have enough room and money's short, but every time I have to move I have to get rid of more stuff!

MRM - add some rum to the jello mix, and it would be perfect for a Tiki themed party! The inebriated would have TONS of fun trying to pick up slippery, quivering can-molded jell-o and taking a bite!

    33. *julia (53 months ago | reply)

What I love about them is they're actually shot glass size! Not that I'm tossing back the shots a lot, ha ha, but it seems they'd be practical for other things, too (paper clips, earrings, spark plugs, whatever ;-)

Actually, I *am* planning a trip to Seattle! My husband just did a short one-week stint with Microsoft and they want him back ... now when did he say? Late spring? In the fall? I don't recall, but since we'll be back in Austin and my mom can watch Max, I'm tagging along! I've always wanted to go.

    34. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

Sedanman - I have several small blue ones, but no dinner plates. I really keep my eyes peeled at thrift stores, but the pickings are slim. It's popular enough that most people know what they've got! I don't use mine everyday, either - just for special events, such as pineapple mold presentation!

Julia - Yes, they are imminently practical! You really must pick some up when you're in Seattle!

    35. Sedanman [deleted] (53 months ago | reply)

Those little tiki mugs are an attractive buy, but I've gotten to the point where I'm fairly descerning in what Tiki stuff I'll buy. Although I can't afford real authentic tiki products, I try to buy stuff from vendors that are reputable in the tiki community and not mass produced. I guess it's kind like buying a reprint of a vintage magazine vs the real thing - the newer one doesen't have the same appeal. But from a non-collectable standpoint, Archie's stuff is fun for parties and a good buy.

That's great, Julia! When you come I'll have to meet you guys for dinner somewhere (hmm, maybe Hula Hula!) or something. I don't know exactly where I'll be living in a few months, but it will be within the Seattle area (I actually live closer to Microsoft/Redmond now than I do Seattle, and hope to stay on the east side of the lake if I can)

MRM - the one I have is dark blue and has one scratch that is very apparent when it's not covered with fake fruit, so I couldn't bear to use it and make it worse. My sister gave it to me as a gift about ten years ago, and I was shocked to see how much new ones go for when I was in a home-type store recently!

    36. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

I shudder at the thought of a reprinted vintage magazine! I understand about the appeal thing completely. You've got to admit, though, that those cups are fun!

    37. Sedanman [deleted] (53 months ago | reply)

That was a long edit I just made - can't even remember what I changed, and you aready commented! Yes, Arhchie's cups are fun, but I've kept myself from buying them several times as I haven't been entertaining as much, as well as the the moving issue!

    38. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

I've never really looked for the new Fiesta stuff. I don't know who around here would sell it. The old stuff, though, is shockingly expensive at antique stores! I found this one at Value Village for 69 cents :-) I found a tiny turquoise one, too, at the same time. Then, oddly, I found another one in some cast off junk at the side of a country road! There were a few others with it, but they were knock-off lookalikes. .... and yes, I stop at the sides of country roads to look at junk!

You are quite strong if you've avoided buying those cups several times already!

    39. *julia (53 months ago | reply)

They sell the new stuff at department stores, here, MRM!

I have a tall (vintage) coffee pot in a really particular green I don't often see ... the other day I found four coffee cups/saucers in the same green. But they were $28 apiece! I just can't pay a ridiculous price like that.

I know what you mean, Thor, about the tiki mugs. If it was a full-size, I think I'd want a vintage one or an artist offering. But those are so tiny, and the colors! That palette is really my favorite.

    40. Miss Retro Modern (53 months ago | reply)

Oh, I wouldn't swing $28, either! I wouldn't even regret leaving them behind at that price!

I understand you perfectly about the tiki mugs, too, Julia! I wouldn't like them so much, somehow, if they were full sized 'real' cups! I'm crazy for that palette, too, of course.

    41. Sedanman [deleted] (53 months ago | reply)

I think that's the reason I didn't buy them - I wanted full sized mugs, and they were really cheap looking unlike these tiny ones. I ended up just getting one nice "artist offering" mug for display purposes, but could see those tiny ones as perfect party shot glasses - if I were a drinker ;O)

MRM - if you're still looking, I saw "new" Fiesta-ware at JC Penney's a few years back. Not sure if they still make it...
