The Turning Of The Fagus

The Turning Of The Fagus

Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

This was one of my concept shots from the Turning Of The Fagus week, 2013, from Cradle Mountain National park.

For the record, these are all leaves that I found on the ground - not a single one was picked from its' branches.

I don't know much about this species, only that it turns colours (usually) during a specific week of the year, and only in two places in Tasmania. So I'm going to give you a link to read a bit more about it. If you're feeling a little lazy, let me summarise:
Link: www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2000/04/01/2662876.htm

Summary:
At the end of autumn, a tree in the middle of the Tasmanian bush does something unusual. It changes colour to red, orange and gold. Local people call it the "turning of the fagus" and it's a spectacular reminder of Australia's Gondwanan heritage.
The Tasmanian Deciduous Beech grows in dense stands, but even in autumn colours it's not that easy to find. The beech is mainly restricted to high rainfall areas in the central and western mountains of Tasmania, with a few minor populations on some of the southern mountains.

Two of the best places to see the 'turning of the fagus' are Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park and Mt Field National Park. But you'll need your bushwalking boots. Traditionally, the ANZAC Day weekend (April 25th) is when bushwalkers head out to catch the trees in their autumn blaze.

A quick processing in the style of an Australian Master photographer. Can you guess who?

Iceland, somewhere near Snaefellsnes Penninsula.

We were in Iceland, on our second day. Having made plans to stay overnight in Snaefellsnes. It had been a long day, however, the landscapes on the side of the road were just too good to pass up.

Rocky Cape, Tasmania

I've just gotten back from a trip to Tasmania for a quick 5-days. Most of which, I spent at Cradle Mountain for the Turning Of The Fagus, a deciduous beech tree/shrub that changes colour during one week.

More of that soon!
