Great mosaic/collage. Funny story about a
tefillin...I went to Brandeis University back
in the early 70s. Why I chose it I don't
remember, just thought it was cool I guess.
I knew nothing about Judaism and didn't know
anyone who I knew was Jewish. I did know
some Jews looking back, but I didn't know it
at the time. So, I go to Brandeis and I quickly learn a
bit about Judaism, especially the more
liberal varieties. I met this very very cute
girl in the school pub one evening, really
enjoyed her. She told me what dorm she lived
in and the next day I thought I would just
walk over and say hello. It was a first floor
apt type dorm room. I walk up the the room
and I see this funny thing on the door post.
Sort of like a box. I couldn't figure out
what it was of course. I knocked and
waited....and she comes to the door with the
box on her forehead! I was like...'oh,
hello. How are you today. Did you know you
have a box on your forehead?' She invited me
in and of course I started asking questions
about it. She explained it all to me and so I
was educated. I also realized this was
serious stuff for her and it wasn't the
evening to ask to go drinking and carousing!
I also turned out to not be to her liking all
that much because I wasn't, as was very
obvious at that point, not Jewish.
I told the story to someone later and they
got very irate, telling me my story had to be
baloney because a woman would never wear a
tefillin on her head, it was only men who did
that. So, then I was educated further!
Anyway, congrats to your son on his Bar
Mitsvah and don't be too hard on people who
have no idea what the 'box' is all about! LOL
As soon as you mentioned Brandeis (and
liberal), I knew your story would involve a
woman putting on tefillin.
I also understand your surprise on seeing a
"box" on her head. I roomed one
summer with someone from Oklahoma, and I
warned him the first night that he'd see
something weird (to him) the next morning.
But thanks for the comment. You're kind of
the king of mosaics/collages, right?
Actually I didn't arrive in Oklahoma until
well after my Brandeis years. I was from
Connecticut at that time, and before that
(and after until 94) in California. I would say I am more like the grand high
poobah of collages rather than a king. haha...seriously though. I find combinations
of images very powerful storytellers and very
beautiful formal statements. I spend hours
and hours on collages, finding miniscule
compositional nuances that I completely get
enveloped in. I love it.
