I grew up just south of Milwaukee. Southeast Wisconsin. (Take a peak at the dialect map!) The thing yer looking at? We call 'em bubblers.
I don't get real adamant about the whole drinking fountain/bubbler debate. To be honest, I use the two pretty interchangeably, with a noticeable leaning toward "drinking fountain" for some kinds and "bubbler" for others.
But coming to school in Minnesota, where people will defend to the death absurd phrases like "duck duck grey duck" and "atm machine," the fact that I sometimes use the word "bubbler" became a point of identity. It never occured to me it was a big deal until I left home.
I s'pose a lot of things are like that.
