View From Morrow Mountain

At 936 feet above sea level, Morrow Mountain is the highest point in Stanly County. It was named for James McKnight Morrow, who donated more than 1,000 acres to the State of North Carolina to create a state park.

Sugarloaf Mountain is the park's second highest peak at 858 feet. Sugarloaf is named for its resemblance to the cone-shaped loaf in which sugar was once sold.

This overlook provides northeasterly views of the park and surrounding countryside. The Pee Dee River serves as the park's eastern boundary and also separates Stanly and Montgomery Counties.

Lake Tillery is a 17-mile-long impoundment of the Yadkin-Pee Dee river system, formed by hydroelectric dams at each end. The section of Lake Tillery viewed from this overlook is part of the Pee Dee River. The normal water level of Lake Tillery is 278 feet above sea level.

What a vista -- and what an amazing sky! Love the light on the trees in the center foreground. We are blessed that such beauty exists (and that we have cameras to capture it, heh!).
