Pictures of the British Cemetery in Ocracoke, NC (USA). During WWII, Great Britain loaned the US 24 anti-submarine trawlers. These ships, mostly converted fishing vessels, were lightly armed and intended to protect coastal waters against German submarines. In 1942, the HMT Bedforshire was torpedoed by a submarine and sank off Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. The villagers of Ocracoke recovered 4 bodies and buried them in a small plot on the island. This plot was then given in lease to the British Commonwealth in honor of these sailors, so they can be buried in British soil. The cemetery is maintained by the US Coast Guard Station in Ocracoke.
