With various test splotches of paint. The only tricky thing has been negotiating around and under the windows, which required some table saw wizardry.

Man, the thumbnail made me think that this was going to be a picture of a Rothko or something. Maybe someone has a second calling..?

What color did you decide on for this room?

We ended up going with a gold-ish color, which is not as scary as it sounds! It's very warm and goes well with the red items we have in the room (rug, pillows, throw blanket). We wanted something that would make the place feel cozy but not too dark. Or too much like Dijon mustard.
Settling on the color, as you may have noticed, was no easy feat, mainly because nothing looked the same on the wall as it did in the sample. That lavender color up there, for instance, was a very, very pale, dusty mauve color. Looked great in the sample packet, but way too pastel on our walls. Same with the red. It came out much darker and more saturated than the sample. And we probably tried out about twenty versions of "sage green" before scrapping that idea. No matter what we tried (lighter, darker, more blue, less blue), it just never looked right.
Just goes to show that you should never assume that the paint will look the same way on your walls as it does in the can or at the store!

Haha, I want a blowup of that Vogue with power tool/glue gun resting on it. An object lesson in breaking down the butch/femme boondoggle.
