"Wałęsa" film set

At the gates of the shipyard in Gdańsk where it all happened.

And by 'it' I mean the beginnings of the victorious fight for freedom in Poland that lasted through the seventies and eighties.

I was born under a government that denied me freedom of speech and many other basic rights. I was eight years old when these rights were restored to me- and I understood very well how lucky I was, and what I owed to the people who fought the system.

Darkening this photo for the anti-SOPA protest, I can't help but feel bitterly disappointed that such a crippling law is even being considered in that free, golden West we denizens of the lands behind the Iron Curtain thought so highly of.
