let there be light...

let there be light... by darkmatter.
...and radio, tv, microwaves, x-rays...you get the idea.

In 1873, the Scottish physicist James Maxwell made a profound connection between sparks and fridge magnets, and realized that light is an intertwined wave of electric and magnetic fields.

Our eyes only see a narrow slice of the electromagnetic spectrum -- about one octave in musical terms. The rest gives us radio, tv, etc.

Originally Maxwell wrote 20 equations in 20 variables. It was Oliver Heaviside who condensed it in the form we see today in textbooks. Unfortunately he doesn't get recognized for his work.

good to know, arvind, thanks. i only associate him with that boring step function.

strobo- they describe light! when Maxwell wrote them down he realized that light travels at a fixed speed and must span an infinte spectrum, not just what we see.
