Cascade Falls

Cascade Falls by Cayusa.
Week 16, Assignment 1

Beautiful Water - Photos of natural bodies of water. Allowed: oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, etc. Not allowed: water in cups, dripping faucets, etc.

Patapsco Valley State Park

Cascade Falls

One of the prettiest spots for beautiful water near where I live. I could hang out in this spot all day. There is a lot of foot and bike traffic just off camera and up past the falls (it's a popular trail and park), but even with all of that, it is still quiet and serene.

Why a Favorite?
Same reason as the other waterfall shot is. This one was taken a month or so later so I've got more green in it, but again, I love these types of shots and I'm impressed with myself that I've pulled off some good ones.

This is great -- I took a similar direction in my submission and found out how hard it is to properly expose a shot to get that really silky texture with the water. You chose a beautiful waterfall to boot :-) All of the waterfalls I wanted to visit for this assignment are still frozen over or covered in snow!!

I love this! Wish I had something like this nearby. I love how the falling water makes itself look soft and ephemeral, & I love the color of the big rock on the left. Beautiful!

The inconvenience of waiting for the area to clear was well worth the effort. This is beautiful!

My goodness, that is a lovely spot. If I found somewhere like that near my home to just sit, I might never be online. ;-) Definitely fits the "beautiful water" idea.

Excellent. I have not been successful with this technique, though my friend Wes (BamaWebster) does them daily. You rock.

Check out my EXIF data for a bit of a guideline. I usually end up taking about 100 shots at different settings and then going through and picking out the best of the bunch. You have to use a higher f-stop and you don't want to take the shot during the brightest part of the day or it'll over expose, but 1/4 or 1/5 exposure time should do it.

Can you send me a link to his stuff? I'd love to see it. I did a search for BamaWebster and didn't come up with any results.

I'm been reading his name wrong for two years. It's BamaWester. Geez. He actually taught me how to do it, but I just haven't been patient. Here's a recent waterfall. I bought one from him for a design job (water bottle for Eddie's in Charles Village), so I got all the technicals. :)

Very nice work. I appreciate that you have the EXIF data (can't understand why everyone doesn't share that info); it is really instructive. I would have guessed that this was a longer exposure, was surprised to see it was only three-tenths of a second. Gives a beautiful, smooth and silky texture to the water, without being too exposed. And my compliments to the guy that built that waterfall, it looks so natural! hahaha But seriously, the waterfall itself is just gorgeous... the colors of the rocks and moss and the colors and shapes of the trees framing the falls and the complexity or multitude of little streams that make up the overall falls. Just beautiful. Congratulations for finding such a beautiful spot to share, and for capturing it so adeptly.

I'm with you on the whole EXIF data. So many times I find a picture that I absolutely love and want to know more about it, but there is no data associated with it. I can understand for film shots, but if it's digital I'd love to see the data so that I could try a similar shot.

Also, thanks for the kind words!
