TCA Manufacturing Matters -Quebec |
In less than five years, Quebec has lost
18 per cent of its manufacturing
workforce –a total of 125,000 jobs, more
than any other province in the country.
This translates to a loss of over $5
billion in wages every year from local
economies and more than $1 billion in
income tax revenue, eroding healthcare,
social services and education. Job loss
is so severe that February alone saw the
loss of 33,000 jobs in Quebec.
The crisis in manufacturing is far
reaching -cities most adversely impacted
are Montreal, Sherbrooke, Monteregie,
Cote Nord, Mauricie, Estrie, Chaudiere,
Laurentides, Lanaudiere &
Abitibi-Temiscamingue. Yet,
manufacturing remains critical to many
economies and accounts for 1 in 6 jobs
across Quebec.
The Canadian Auto Workers union and
TCA-Quebec has launched the campaign
‘Manufacturing Matters,’ highlighting
the sweeping job losses, exploring the
impact they have had on our communities
and what we can do as citizens. Already
thousands of community members across
the country have come together to voice
their concerns.
