Which I believe is anybody.

I remember snickering with my friends when we were told it was a gateway drug. In a few years my junkie friends were dying. I no longer even recognized them. Guess the gateway thing had some credence. I see Cali's system as Pandora's box for a lot of people who don't quite understand that.

Pete Zarria — Drug addiction is a bad situation. However, I have to respectfully disagree with the gateway drug theory. While it may be true that 98% of heroin addicts started with marijuana, 98% of marijuana smokers don't become heroin addicts[1]. If one subscribes to the gateway drug theory, breast milk must be the gateway to everything!

As far as legalizing marijuana[2] or any other drug, I don't think legalization will make much difference at all. I don't know anybody that bases their usage or non-usage of marijuana or anything else on whether or not it is legal. The people that want to smoke it already smoke it, and the people that don't want to already don't. The War on Drugs kills far more people and ruins far more lives than the drugs do.

[1] I made up these numbers to make a point. I have no idea what the real numbers are.

[2] Marijuana is immoral and dangerous. Until the government wants more tax revenue. There are discussions going on about legalizing marijuana in California so it can be taxed.

Susceptibility and tendency to addiction. I have an addictive personality, so I simply must stay away from some things. Others are not so inclined and escape relatively unscathed. Some are just going along, some of them discover their addictiveness. Many grow up and out of it.

I'll say this, I never met a junkie who didn't start on something lighter, and I've known too many. Not bad for avoiding the stuff religiously. It was one of the things I knew I wouldn't come back from if I did it.

As I told my nephew, for every life drugs has made better, I will show him 1,000 that they have destroyed. And when his list is exhausted, mine will not be. Bad odds, maybe its just my upbringing.

Drugs can be a thief. I knew I would provoke people, I guess. I should shut up.

I am addicted to air, water and food. They consume me everyday. I can't seem to shake any of them. Never tried "Medical Marijuana". I have a hard enough time paying for the air, water and food habits.

Definitely not a gateway drug. You can say that every hard drug user started with marijuana, but that's no different than saying drivers started at the age of three in a little pedal car. Few people start anything in a hardcore manner. We mostly put our toes in the water before we ever try total immersion.

Dope isn't the seed for making a junkie. The seed is already planted within the junkie's DNA. The vast majority of the weed-smoking public goes on with their normal lives and never experience the destruction of a more insidious addiction.

Good conversation going here with lots of different points of view, I think I agree with Jibby on this one.

jijen is ridiculously busy — Aren't drugs legal in your part of the woods when you're in Europe? I might be wrong—I get those small (extremely picturesque) countries confused sometimes.

Pete Zarria — Different points of view are a good thing.

kpaxsmith — Unfortunately, it's probably going to get worse before it gets better.

Quay Bell — I heard on the news, in a story about possibly legalizing all pot here so it can be taxed, that marijuana is California's biggest cash crop and is bigger than the next six crops combined. Instead of the Golden State we should be the Green State. Wow!

Jibby! — Do you mean to say that if we ban kiddie cars that we won't have as many people driving badly on the roads? ;-)

HotshotsSR1 — I would love to be able to find a civil debate about the issue with well-thought arguments on all sides. Too many evolve into screaming matches and hard-line ideology wars.

socalgal_64 — Thank you. I just noticed that this is the first comment that addresses the photo. Ha ha ha!
