Beauty, Chuck, the shot I wished I'd taken.

We were on the same stretch on the 27th. My wife swears she saw someone who looked like you. If so, its a damn pity. I would have loved to see you.

I think your Burma Shave signs are along this stretch. It's very possible we might have passed each other on the road. It would have been fun to meet you face-to-face.

I used to live on the Hualapai Reservation in Peach Springs in 1995 and 1996. For one reason or another I just haven't made it back to see how things are going. I kept telling myself, "This trip for sure." So we ended up on Route 66.

Exactly, the Burma Shave signs are start a few miles outside Seligman.

I tried looking in all the photos I took from this spot in full size to see if I could see the Burma Shave signs, but I didn't find any. After a little ways the road gets distorted by the rising heat waves. Oh well, next time I'll do better.

Great composition. What's the speed limit? A straightaway like that would make me want to see how fast my car can go...
Posted 14 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Caveman 92223  Pro User  says:

Thanks. I think the speed limit was about 65 MPH, unless there wasn't a cop around. Then it was 165 MPH.

It takes me back. I first ran this road eastward from Kingman in 1955. The next time was heading westward in 1966 when I left New England with wife and 4 kids and became a westerner. Nice shot.

Jibby!  Pro User  says:

Well, my car won't go 165, but it would be fun to try.

Thanks. That history goes back quite a ways. In 1955, I hadn't been born yet. I was in 1966, though. ;-)

Several years ago I figured out mathematically that my little 4-cylinder Toyota pickup would have a maximum cruising speed of 104 MPH. I used engine RPMs, transmissions gear ratios, differential gear ratios, tire size, etc. I haven't tried it yet.

I've had my little 4-cylinder Hyundai up to 100, but only briefly, as it was beginning to fly apart.

You scofflaw! Next time I go out to the desert I'll take some photos of a straight, flat road that goes forever, not like the bumpy twisty road in this photo. Those are some roads for testing your speed limit-violating capabilities.

©haddock81 — It's always a great place to visit. If you are lucky enough to get snow[1] it's even better.

[1] Apologies to friends that are snowed-in right now. It doesn't snow here all that often so it's a treat to see "different" scenery.

RDRussell — I was in a car on the trip I took this photo. I usually carry my camera and other goodies in the trunk behind the passenger seat and get them out at picture stops. Quite often I'll carry a small point-and-shoot in a pocket for snapping quick, one-handed, point-in-the-general-direction pictures while I'm moving—terrain, weather, traffic, etc. permitting.
