day three three four: hee! by cauchy09

day three three four: hee!

i woke up at 4:30am for no reason, was a zombie until the coffee kicked in at 7. spent the morning spinning in a flurry of emails and then took my students to visit a biotech company.

i'm home and the sun is still out? yay!

of course, i just have to sit down here at home and start writing again until sleep...but a ten-minute power nap feels like a good idea.

former hexagons by cauchy09

former hexagons

i'm pretty sure that the issues i had blocking these crocheted hexagons were going to prevent me from ever returning to the project. so, feeling a bit agitated about work at midnight last Sunday, i decided to frog them and turn them into a super scrappy granny square Babetter.

the jury is still out on this swatch. this might look like a pool of clown barf or it might be the delightful scrappiness i seek in everything i do these days. it's definitely right on that fine dividing line...

a guide to getting wonky within wonky by cauchy09

a guide to getting wonky within wonky

someone asked how i made this block.

the final size was to be 13" square. so i gridded out a 13x13 square on graph paper and then subdivided into squares and rectangles. i started with the 6x6 placement and then gridded the other strips in a log cabin fashion around it.

then i improvised in piecing the smaller components. keep in mind that these numbers don't include the seam allowance--add 0.5" to each dimension. the final block is 13.5" square.

the grid is just the overall guideline. if you stare hard enough and compare the two, you'll see that i ended up using a mirror image of part of the design because i needed to separate some repeated prints.

this is the same idea that underlies this design.

fabric from Cameroon by cauchy09

fabric from Cameroon

a colleague just came back from spending a sabbatical at home in Cameroon and she brought back this lovely fabric for me.

it'll make a nice skirt and a few other things...
