GLaDOS (with better eye color)

Oh, it's you. It's been a long time. How have you been? I've been really busy being constructed of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. You know, after you murdered me?

Fortunately the Aperture Science Emergency Recreational Building Element Reconstruction Initiative has provided me with a new body. Consequently, testing can recommence immediately.

For Science.

You monster.

----

As a number of people pointed out, the color of her eye in the previous photos was not quite right. It isn't really as red as it looked in those photos--I used a 1x1 solid orange round--but it still wasn't correct. I finally figured out how to get it right: I changed the round to pearl gold.

Some people had also requested a profile shot. This is harder to do than you might think because of the support structures I built for her, but hopefully this will help.

Speaking of the support structures, I tried something different this time to eliminate the shadows from them: I turned her upside down and took the shot that way, then rotated it in post. This worked quite well, I think.

The "eye" is illuminated by a single Lifelites LED connected to an eLite Basic above her support disc. Since she's supposed to be such a mess of wires and hoses anyway, I decided not to hide the cable by running it through her body, instead letting it just be part of the model.

Thank you very much, everyone! I'm stunned at the attention this has gotten. So far it has been picked up by Brothers Brick, Kotaku, Rock Paper Shotgun, G4TV, Joystiq, Machinima, and an absolutely astonishing number of other places. (Edit: wow--the Kotaku article is now linked on the news pane of the Steam interface for Portal 2 when you view that game in your Library!) I average between one to two thousand total page views on my photostream per day; yesterday I had 71,510 and today has already broken 100k.

If you are coming here from elsewhere because you love Lego Portal, you should definitely check out Legohaulic's ATLAS and P-Body and LDM's Turrets. I haven't tried building either because they've already done it perfectly.

For those asking for instructions, LDraw files or DesignByMe, I'm afraid that's really not possible. GLaDOS uses a number of parts that aren't available in DBM, and many of the connections are extremely unorthodox. I will say that most of her core is based around ball joints, particularly some of the new Hero Factory parts that are in Pick-a-Brick at the Bellevue Lego Store. The black tube at the top is a tire turned inside-out, and the illumination of her eye is a Lifelites LED powered by an eLite Basic hidden in the support superstructure, shining through a pearl gold 1x1 round plate. Her "arms" are 3mm flex tube (a semi-rigid tubing used in some Lego sets) onto which some headlight bricks and 1x1 bricks with side studs have been threaded.

That said, I will see if I can post some breakdown shots in the next few days. I will be keeping her intact and she will be on display at Brickcon 2011 in Seattle this October.

Yes, and "Aperture Science Emergency Recreational Building Element Reconstruction Initiative" is my line as well (for those who are worried that it's a spoiler--it's not). Think about the meaning of "Recreational Building Element" for a moment. :)

Thanks for getting back to us, I'm sure it's been quite the rollercoaster ride for you!

If you can't make a digital creation, Breakdowns are the next best thing! My only add-on request would be if doing a part list as well would be possible.

    Thanks agains,

    Mike

It's funny, all of these shots of GLaDOS have ended up as my wallpaper :)
I like this angle better than the original. It has more... personality.

  37. Catsy [CC] (25 months ago | reply)

Who knows? One thing I will say is that once I finish my Portal Gun and Chell customs, I will probably try to do a scene with them and GLaDOS.

If you look through the comments on this photo, there's a link to a Lego PotatOS that is completely to scale with this GLaDOS.

Just in case it gets lost in the spam, though, here's the link again: Lego PotatOS

  38. pimpingreenhat (25 months ago | reply)

I can't wait to see that, perhaps you could have the wall plates flying into place in the scene? Just a thought.
Also, that is a perfect potatOS :)

You are a horrible person. That's what it says. I am not kidding. A horrible person. We were not even testing for that. - GLaDOS. Awesome build though. You truly captured her.
