I still don't understand how you do this HDR! You take three seperate pictures? (If so if it's hand held how can they all be exactly the same?) Or just take three copies of the same photo and alter the settings afterwards? And you have to have a special program?

It's really supposed to be done with a tripod but I have nerves of steel and am pretty good at being completely still and shooting at high speed. You take 3 or more exposures, bracketing them +/- 1 or 2 f-stops from the proper exposure. My camera has a setting where it will bracket automatically. Thus you have a series of 3-5 or however many photos, some underexposed and some overexposed and some properly exposed.

You then use special software to 'merge' them together and it is able to then bring out a much broader range of tones than you can obtain from one single photo.

It's really quite fascinating! When I bought my new camera I made sure to get one that had the kind of bracketing capabilities that I needed to do HDR.

A fine example of HDR... often HDR can look overblown.. like the pic has been attacked by someone with bright un-naturally coloured crayons
this pic just seems to show to great effect what is there... nicely done
