Ground Control to Major Otis

Whenever we travel back and forth to the Catskills as a family I sit in the backseat to comfort my nutty pets. Otis, in his carrier, sits at my feet. Whenever I glance down I see this.

I know this is pretty bad, but it makes me laff.

I didn't even know they made carriers like that... we've always had opaque plastic ones. The look on that face is priceless. He looks like he's getting buried alive in a clear coffin or something.

I picked this one specifically so Otis could see me. Plus, it isn't totally open on the end -- there are holes on both ends, so when his meows aren't so silent the carrier muffles it quite a bit. The only thing is you can't take this kind of carrier on an airplane -- I am sure it is not as sturdy as the plastic ones.

I should take some updated pictures of my cat-in-a-box ..

He fell out of this box once while we were carrying him to the car. The latches came undone, Otis hit the street, and after shaking off the shock he took off straight for the intersection of 71st/Broadway/Amsterdam. He hid under a Mini Cooper while Jeff guarded the perimeter, all the while screaming for me. When I finally figured out what was going on I ran back to where Jeff & Otis were and bent down under the car hoping he would let me grab him. He took off again, but this time he went straight into a bakery on the corner of 71st Street that had its doors propped open. Jeff ran after him, closed the doors, and Otis made a beeline for the kitchen. Long story short, after much commotion, the dropping of trays, and the Hindi screams of "no cat in here! no cat in here!," Jeff got Otis is his arms and emerged from the bakery to a jubilant crowd of on-lookers and well-wishers.

It took us hours to calm down.

We were shaking. Plus there were bitter recriminations of "you didn't latch the box right!" Fortunately, we got past that quickly. Jeff's quick reactions saved the day, really. He even wrote a song about it ... this is now referred to as Otis's Broadway Debute.

(we still use the same box, but with a bungee around it)
