This month's PP DSLR skills brief is to take a shot... of anything... in b&w. I don't normally think in b&w, and only occasionally do I realise a colour shot I took would suit b&w, so it's a challenge to imagine a monochrome. This double yellow line was crumbling, and I thought the different textures might work well.

As this is for the DSLR course, it's straight out of camera, no editing. Taken in aperture priority mode with f/2.8 and a 100mm prime lens, focusing on the crumbled paint.

I thought the liferings on the boat would add a splash of contrast with the sculler and man on the bank adding a bit of movement to an otherwise static scene.

As this is for the DSLR course, it's straight out of camera, no editing. Taken in aperture priority mode with f/2.8 and a 100mm prime lens, focusing on the foreground boat to get the shallow DoF.

Time for a new icon!

Module 6 from PP's "The Assignment". The overal project is mood and emotion, but the brief is to interpret a song/album/film title. "My Funny Valentine" is one of my favourite songs, especially the Chet Baker version, and is very topical! You can imagine it being sung in a dimly lit smoky jazz bar. So, I chose to light the subject with a spotlight (well, a torch) and to try out heart shaped bokeh in the background to match the mood of the song.
