Dramatic, but not upset. Just a lot of
energy going on right there.
I need that lens.

Just curious: is this straight on-camera
flash, or bounced? I notice you're using spot
metering -- do you set the flash power set
manually?

Nice exposure, I originally thought that it
was natural lighting.

1) This makes me want to learn flash
techniques. This and your various
strobist-related photo posts all do. Very
neat stuff.
2) I went to two cello recitals today. Both
musicians were very dynamic while playing. I
wish I had talked to them before about
shooting during pieces, or brought a sweater
to muffle the sound of the camera cycling.

At f1.4, how did you get past the shallow DOF
and have such a sharp finish?
Usually if I use f2.8 or bigger, only the
susbject nose is sharp and everything else is
blurred.

OK so I've got the whole circle of confusion
/ hyperfocal distance in my brain.
As an example at 85mm f1.4 with a flash,
how far were you from the subject when you
took this shot? (sounds like an algebra
problem)

Junior Diggs: Haha, more like a trig problem.
Angle of view at 85mm, 1.5x crop factor...
Also: When I've been bored, I've shot graph
paper at an angle with my 50/1.4 to get a
better feel for the volume of space that will
be in focus.

spending a whole weekend photographing poetry

capture effectively...
